TSMC's chip foundry model enabled fabless companies like Nvidia and Apple to thrive. Go to newsletter preferences Thanks for signing up! AdvertisementThere is a good chance that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, or TSMC, is involved in almost every electronic device you see. Founded in 1987 by entrepreneur Morris Chang, the silicon wafer maker used a pure-play foundry model. This model involved other companies designing computer chips and then contracting TSMC to manufacture them.

Saudi Arabia is optimistic about gaining access to U.S. chipmaker Nvidia's high-performance chips, which would enable it to develop and operate the most advanced artificial intelligence models. It's a significant expectation given that the United States' strict export controls have thus far prevented the chips' export to the kingdom. Habib made the comments on the sidelines of GAIN, Saudi Arabia's international AI summit, which took place in Riyadh this week. It "will mean a lot" for Saudi Arabia to have access to the chips, Habib said — in this case, the Nvidia H200s, the firm's most powerful chips, which are used in OpenAI's GPT-4o. We worked hard in the past three years in building capacity, in human capacity, we also build data capacity as well.

Wall Street appears to have given Nvidia a mulligan. A number of positive headlines around AI demand have lifted Nvidia and other stocks that benefit from the adoption of the buzzy tech. "There's kind of a do-over in terms of what happened with [CEO Jensen Huang], what happened with Nvidia," Cramer said on "Squawk on the Street," referring to the response to its much-ballyhooed earnings report Aug. 28 . The Investing Club also has a stake in Broadcom, which like Nvidia had been punished after its recent earnings report. Advanced Micro Devices , another AI chipmaker, and Eaton , which makes electrical equipment used in the expanding data center market, have added about 13% and 7%, respectively, this week.

The company is turning to Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo for help. In a recent meeting with Raimondo, Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger voiced frustration over the heavy reliance that U.S. companies have on Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing , the world's largest contract chipmaker. Intel is currently building out plants in four U.S. states as it seeks to become more of a foundry business, manufacturing chips for other suppliers. It's an increasingly important initiative for Intel, which is getting trounced in the market for microprocessors. Concerns have been rising for years that China could invade Taiwan, creating a massive risk for the U.S. chip industry.

Nvidia 's wild price swings are having a strong hold on the entire market, and "insane" options trading in the chipmaker could be the culprit. While some believe Wednesday's advance was driven by CEO Jensen Huang's bullish comments about artificial intelligence , others think the action was mostly triggered by the explosion of short-term options trading activity in Nvidia. "I don't think yesterday's +8% ripper in the stock was fundamentally driven," Wells Fargo trading desk said in a note to clients Thursday. The desk pointed to a host of Nvidia call options that are set to expire on Friday, and which were the most actively-traded contracts Wednesday. Tema ETFs' Yuri Khodjamirian is keeping a close watch on chip designer Qualcomm Inc . As AI shifts from data centers — an Nvidia "stronghold" — to the " edge ," investors should "start looking at companies like Qualcomm," Khodjamirian said. That continues a trend from 2023, when generative AI companies raised $25.9 billion for the full year, up more than 200% from 2022. The average round for AI companies is 140% bigger this year compared with last, the data shows, while for non-AI companies the increase is only 10%. Most venture investors are bullish on the potential for generative AI to eventually create big returns at the application layer. John-David Lovelock, an analyst at Gartner and a 35-year veteran of the IT industry, sees a big opportunity for generative AI in the enterprise. Yet, in 2024, only 1% of the trillion dollars spent on software will be from businesses spending on generative AI products, he said.

New York CNN —Wall Street is eyeing what could be the most consequential economic data report in months due out Friday. At the same time, Wall Street is looking for signs that the job market is cooling steadily, rather than plummeting into conditions for a recession. That uncertainty has been palpable in recent days as Wall Street parsed several economic reports before Friday’s main event. Big Tech shares gained Thursday, but suffered steep losses earlier this week. Tesla, the only Magnificent Seven tech stock up for the week, has jumped 7.5%.

Nvidia is suddenly in trouble

CNN —Nvidia, the AI chipmaking titan that was briefly the world’s most valuable company, has suddenly found itself in an unfamiliar position: a major rut. Nvidia (NVDA) had the worst day in the history of the stock market Tuesday, as measured by loss in total market value. To put that shocking decline into context, only 27 companies on the planet are worth as much as Nvidia lost in value Tuesday. That’s why bulls like Wedbush’s Dan Ives believe Nvidia’s stock decline presents a buying opportunity. – CNN’s Ramishah Maruf contributed to this reportCorrection: Correction: An earlier version of this story incorrectly described TSMC's relationship with Nvidia.

Dow falls by more than 600 points as September turns ugly
  + stars: | 2024-09-03 | by ( Lucy Bayly | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +3 min
New York CNN —Wall Street kicked off the month of September with a bust, after a disappointing economic report dragged down the Dow by 626 points, or 1.5%, Tuesday afternoon. Traders were already jittery ahead of a big month of economic news, from Friday’s key jobs report to next week’s inflation readings and then the long-awaited rate cut from the Fed mid-month. Investors were reacting to a weaker-than-expected jobs report that underscored fears that the Fed had mishandled inflation and pushed the economy right into a recession. Friday’s jobs report is arguably the most important piece of economic data that central bank officials will have to parse before their monetary policy meeting on September 17-18. International benchmark Brent fell to $73.70 a barrel and US benchmark West Texas Intermediate closed at just above $70 a barrel.
