China has become one of the world’s most competitive sporting nations in recent decades, seeing its Olympic performance as a symbol of national strength. In 2008, it topped the gold medal table at the Beijing Games, surpassing the US for the first time. In Paris, the Chinese team appeared on course to top the medal table as it built up a sizable early lead over Team USA, thanks to its domination in shooting and diving. On microblogging site Weibo, the hashtag “China tied for first place on the gold medal leaderboard” became the top trending topic, racking up more than 500 million views. “We won every gold medal square and fair!” said a top comment with over 28,000 likes.

Sarah Stier / Getty Images filePerhaps most impressive is the sheer number of medals won by U.S. women. The country in fourth place, with the closest number of medals to the American women, is Great Britain, with 65 medals. Sixty-seven medals is a record for U.S. women and a record for any country’s women in general, beating the U.S. total of 66 in Tokyo. Biles and Suni Lee went 1-2 on the all-around and became the first two all-around women gold medalists to go head-to-head in an all-around final. The women’s U.S. basketball team won its eighth Olympic gold in a row, earning a shoutout from former President Barack Obama on X.

PARIS — Everywhere you looked at the 2024 Paris Games, Americans dominated. On the final day of the Games, China is leading Team USA in the medal table, with 39 golds to America’s 38. Its two golds here included the 4x100-meter medley, the first time in Olympic history that anyone had beaten the U.S. Though Russia, a longtime dominant force in the sport, was excluded from these Games, China still achieved a score that far outstripped any competitors. China has also been quick to embrace some of the newer Olympic sports including sport climbing, skateboarding, surfing and breaking.

PARIS — Lin Yu-ting captured featherweight gold on Saturday, defeating Poland’s Julia Szeremeta and shaking off more than a week of specious allegations that she shouldn’t be fighting in the women’s division. The gold medalist is listed at 5-foot-9 and her Polish opponent at 5-foot-5, but the disparity appeared to be greater in real life, with Lin punching downhill and rarely being threatened. Lin and welterweight gold medalist Imane Khelif of Algeria have both dealt with a firestorm of questions from opponents wrongly questioning their gender since they entered Olympic competition. Questions surrounding their gender stemmed from a decision by the Russian-led International Boxing Association to disqualify them at last year’s Women’s World Boxing Championships in New Delhi. The IBA removed those two fighters from a competition at the time, saying they had tests that questioned their gender eligibility.

At Paris 2024, Taiwan’s red and blue flag is banned, as is the name “Taiwan” and its anthem. Security staff confiscated a "Taiwan" towel from a fan during the men's doubles badminton semi-final last week. Taiwan is a self-governing democracy that competes as “Chinese Taipei,” an attempt to participate in the Olympics without angering mainland China. That included the women’s team table tennis quarterfinal between Chinese Taipei and China that NBC News attended Wednesday. “Taiwan Independence, go to die.”“Motherland will retake Taiwan tomorrow, okay?” said another, referring to China.

And they were, in this moment of defeat by a team from a political rival, not even allowed the comfort of their homeland’s name and flag. To be an Olympian from Taiwan is to not exist, at least not officially. To placate China, the island competes at the Games under the awkward designation of Chinese Taipei. “I’m only fighting for myself, through my own hard work,” said Taiwan’s Chen Szu-yu, substituting self for state on the Olympic stage. Her teammate Chien Tung-chuan sidestepped the political discussion entirely, refraining from comment on Taiwan’s status at the Olympics.

PARIS — The second boxer at the center of a global debate over gender eligibility and fairness at the Paris Olympics won her semifinal match Wednesday, ascending to the featherweight gold medal bout. Lin and another female Olympic boxer, Imane Khelif of Algeria, continue to face intense scrutiny and false accusations about their gender and eligibility to compete with women. VILLEPINTE, France — Lin Yu-ting won her quarterfinal bout at the Paris Olympics against Bulgarian Svetlana Staneva in a unanimous decision on Sunday that assured a medal for the featherweight representing Chinese Taipei. Taiwan competes at the Olympics as “Chinese Taipei” as the result of a political compromise – but not under its own name, flag or anthem. Reuters reported that its journalists saw the spectator shouting while being removed mid-match. The banner he was carrying was green, a color used by the island’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party, as well as those who advocate for Taiwanese independence and greater autonomy. Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it “strongly condemns the crude and despicable means of malicious individuals ruthlessly snatching the ‘Go Taiwan’ slogan.”“This violent act is not only uneducated, but also seriously violates the civilized spirit represented by the Olympic Games. It also violates the rule of law and infringes on freedom of speech,” the ministry said in a statement.

For the seventh time, Taiwan will be represented by Morris Chang, the 92-year-old founder of the world-leading Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company. Chang is known as the godfather of the industry that has put Taiwan in the top ranks of high-tech manufacturing and personal electronic devices. Taiwan has participated in APEC since 1991 under the name Chinese Taipei. It began taking part just two years after the group's inception and the same year that China and the semi-autonomous Chinese city of Hong Kong joined. These acts of political intimidation have the potential to wear down the operational resiliency of the island's military equipment and personnel.

HANGZHOU, China (AP) — A month before the Asian Games, China released a new national map, doubling down on its claims to almost the entire South China Sea and disputed border territories with India. At the games themselves, however, outward aggression has taken a backseat to unctuous charm as China sought to win the hearts of more than 40 Asian nations and regions by dazzling them with technology and slathering them with praise. “The Asian Games embodies the Asian people’s shared desire for peace, unity and inclusiveness,” Xi told them, according to his prepared remarks. Signs around Hangzhou billed the city as a “paradise on earth” while China adopted the motto “heart to heart” for the Asian Games, which feature some 12,000 competitors - more than the summer Olympics - from across Asia and the Middle East. “This will undoubtedly open new prospects for cultural exchanges, cultural integration and people-to-people bonds in Asia,” the Chinese Communist Party’s official People’s Daily wrote Monday in an effusive editorial about the Hangzhou games.

Taiwan is a self-ruling island of 24 million people that is officially known as the Republic of China. About only a dozen countries recognize it as a nation because China claims it as one of its provinces. Taiwan is called “Chinese Taipei” by international organizations and at the Olympic Games. The ambiguity of Taiwan’s nationhood contrasts with a growing Taiwanese claim of identity. For many people, it’s through food, one of the things the island is known for, aside from its semiconductor industry.

TAIPEI, Nov 21 (Reuters) - Taiwan told its representative there was no need to avoid Chinese President Xi Jinping at the APEC summit in Thailand, the envoy said on Monday, leading to a rare encounter at a time when China has been stepping up military pressure. "Certainly, the presidential office had said to me if there was an opportunity there was no need to avoid a meeting or a greeting. That was the only instruction," Morris Chang told reporters in Taipei on his return from Bangkok. The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) grouping has traditionally been one of the few forums where China and Taiwan talk, even if just in passing to exchange pleasantries. Taiwan participates at APEC as "Chinese Taipei", the name it also uses to participate in the Olympics and some other events.
