In early February, I went on a two-week trip to Europe, on a mission to travel to six countries — including four of them by train. Here are three major mistakes I made along the way, and what you can do to avoid them. While some train rides — like the one from Venice to Rome on the Italian train company Trenitalia — were empty, others were packed. Many European train routes have multiple stops, and passengers simply get on and off the train. At boarding, hundreds of passengers scrambled for a seat, while I struggled to hoist my massive bag up the train.

Chinese stocks ended the week with four straight days of gains — a rare upswing after a dismal start to the year. "Investing in China, you have to have an active strategy," he said, emphasizing the need to focus on industries that receive policy support. All three are listed on mainland Chinese stock exchanges. In the past six months, foreign investors have pulled around $30 billion from mainland Chinese A shares, the report said. China debuts its first overwater high-speed train
  + stars: | 2023-09-29 | by ( Lilit Marcus | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +2 min
The maximum speed of the trains along this route is 350 kilometers (217 miles) per hour, according to China Railway, the state railway operator. The first train on this line debuted on Thursday, September 28, departing from Fuzhou, the province’s capital, at 9:15 a.m. China Railway says that it used intelligent robots and environmentally friendly corrosion-resistant steel to build out the overwater rail sections. Fujian province is also significant for being the closest part of mainland China to the self-governing island of Taiwan. The plan would turn Kinmen into a “peace island,” or a sort of DMZ between Taiwan and China.

Hong Kong (CNN) -- A promotional video by a state-owned railway in China that asked women to refrain from putting on makeup during train journeys has sparked a fierce backlash and a debate about sexism. On Saturday, the clip by China Railway was the most searched, most read and most debated item on Weibo, China’s Twitter-like social media platform – two months after it was originally posted. “Why does it have to be such a gender-focused case, of women putting on makeup, to illustrate uncivilized behavior?” one Weibo user asked. Another asked, “Will the next move involve banning women on trains once and for all?”CNN has reached out to China Railway for a comment. In response to inquiries by local press, staff at China Railway’s customer service hotline said putting on makeup is not banned on trains.

Laos is one of the few remaining communist countries in the world. But a shiny new railway funded by China now cuts through the countryside. It's a massive 1,000-kilometer, or 621-mile train network that aims to connect Laos with Thailand and Kunming in southern China. Despite being one of the poorest countries in Southeast Asia, Laos took on a $1.8 billion loan from China to build the railway. I flew to Laos from Singapore in early April to experience first-hand how the historic railway is developing.

Antara Foto/Hafidz Mubarak/via REUTERSTEGALLUAR, Indonesia, Oct 13 (Reuters) - A high-speed railway project in Indonesia, part of China's Belt and Road Initiative, is on track for a 2023 launch despite ongoing negotiations between the two countries about the project being over-budget, officials said on Thursday. KCIC has said the project is facing a cost overrun of about $2 billion, raising the estimated total cost to 113 trillion rupiah ($7.36 billion). KCIC's President Director Dwiyana Slamet Riyadi confirmed the discrepancy in cost calculations, saying negotiations are underway to resolve it. Dwiyana said discussions were ongoing as to whether Chinese President Xi Jinping may witness a trial run of the rail project when he visits the Southeast Asian country next month for the G20 leaders' summit.
