Eisenhauer-Epp is co-founder of Navigating Adoption, an online platform for adoptees, and also works with Sisters of China, an adoptee-led organization for female-identifying Chinese adoptees affected by China’s one-child policy. “It just brings so much unknown with Chinese adoptees. Similarly, news about South Korea’s adoption system has shaken many Korean adoptees. Korean adoption agencies charged anywhere between $4,000 and $6,000 per child, according to an Associated Press investigation. For them, the narrative that adoptees should be grateful is “more of a culturally pervasive expectation than an option” for adoptees.

Shein reveals child labor cases at its suppliers

Fast fashion retailer Shein found two cases of child labor at its suppliers last year, it said in its 2023 sustainability report, as it stepped up audits of manufacturers in China to assuage criticisms of its low-cost business model ahead of a planned flotation. Shein tightened its supplier policy last October after the child labor cases were found, so that any severe breaches — called “Immediate Termination Violations” — would result in ending the relationship with the supplier immediately. Previously, suppliers such as those that employed minors had 30 days to resolve the issue, failing which Shein would cut ties. That violation was found in 1.8% of supplier audits in 2021, 0.3% of audits in 2022, and 0.1% in 2023. “We remain vigilant in guarding against such violations going forward, and in line with current policies, will terminate any noncompliant suppliers,” Shein said in the report.

Or worse, the Cantonese language and culture won’t survive another generation. Ceci Pang, a former kindergarten teacher, runs classes for children at Rainbow Seeds Cantonese school in London. Some turn to social media for advice and camaraderie — a Facebook group called “Cantonese Parents” has thousands of members sharing tips on everything from Cantonese books to YouTube videos. After more than 20 years, the school opted not to renew her contract, which effectively eliminated the Cantonese language program. Aleyda Poe has been overseeing the Cantonese kindergarten at Merit Chinese School in Plano, Texas, for over a decade.
