Some analysts feel the Huawei moves could be a first step in comeback efforts by China's "national champion" to rival Apple. By contrast with the hit for Apple suppliers, Huawei's extended recent gains. Reuters GraphicsSCOPE OF CURBS UNCLEARIt was not immediately clear how wide China's iPhone curbs are, but one employee at an affected state-owned enterprise (SOEs) in the capital said they extended to visitors. However, Canalys analyst Nicole Peng said Huawei could present a greater threat to domestic peers, such as Honor, which had benefited from Huawei's woes. The U.S. Commerce Department is seeking more information on the "character and composition" of the new Huawei chip that may violate trade curbs, it said on Thursday.

China is dominant in magnets and the rare earth metals they are made from. Magnet makers are also drawn to Vietnam by low labour costs and market access afforded by multiple free-trade deals. It said it sources most of its rare earths from China but is seeking alternative sources in Vietnam and Australia and plans to develop a processing facility in Vietnam. A similar request from clients prompted another Chinese magnet maker, Magsound, to decide to open a factory in Vietnam in the first half of next year, the two people said. In April, Australia's Strategic Materials (ASM.AX) signed a deal with a Vietnamese refiner that committed to supplying rare earths for export to South Korea.

Apple chose a Chinese firm to assemble its Vision Pro thanks to its openness to "crazy ideas." A Chinese firm responsible for assembling Apple's Vision Pro had a vote of confidence from the tech giant thanks to its willingness to test "crazy" ideas, a new report says. Luxshare, a contract manufacturer, has built close ties with Apple as the latter prepares to launch its mixed-reality headset. The Vision Pro is Apple's biggest hardware launch since the release of the iPhone in 2007 and set to be its riskiest in recent years. Apple and Luxshare did not immediately respond to Insider' request for comment outside regular working hours.

The investment bank called the plan, known by its Production-Linked Incentive Schemes, as a "substantial opportunity" for Greater China tech firms. The initiative incentivizes foreign companies to start manufacturing in India and encourages local firms to expand their production and exports there. Goldman said tech represents more than half of the opportunity. Under the IT hardware initiative, for instance, Greater China tech firms represent 76% of potential capital expenditure contribution. Stock picks Goldman named two buy-rated stocks that it said stand to benefit from India's big manufacturing plans.
[1/4] The BYD Atto 3 EV car is displayed at the 39 Thailand International Motor Expo, in Bangkok, Thailand, November 30, 2022. The company announced in September it would build an EV assembly plant in Thailand with annual capacity of 150,000 cars from 2024. Talks are underway to select a site for the Vietnam plant, said the sources, who declined to be named because the discussions are confidential. The Vietnam plant will export components to the assembly plant to be built in Thailand, one source said. That would pose a direct challenge to VinFast, a Vietnamese EV maker that began selling cars in 2019 and plans to expand in the United States and Europe.
HANOI, Jan 11 (Reuters) - Chinese display maker BOE Technology Group Co Ltd (000725.SZ), a supplier of both Apple Inc (AAPL.O) and Samsung Electronics Co Ltd (005930.KS), plans to invest a substantial sum to build two factories in Vietnam, two people familiar with the matter said. BOE plans to make the more sophisticated organic light-emitting diodes (OLED) screens at the site rather than liquid-crystal displays (LCDs), the person said. Apple, which included BOE in its 2021 list of manufacturing partners, uses OLED screens for its latest iPhone smartphones. The U.S. tech giant, however, plans to start making mobile screens in-house by next year, Bloomberg reported on Wednesday. BOE's Vietnam plan is not specifically aimed at supplying Apple, the person said.
"Chinese companies are getting pretty competitive for iPhone assemblers. More mainland Chinese electronics manufacturing companies are set to take away market share from Taiwanese counterparts such as Foxconn and Pegatron , an investment fund manager said. "Chinese companies are getting pretty competitive for iPhone assemblers. "So that's why eventually, you are going to see more and more Chinese companies taking market share away from Taiwanese electronic companies," Yang added. That comes after Foxconn posted record unaudited revenue in 2022 and reported that output at its iPhone plant in China had "basically returned to normal."
SHANGHAI, Jan 5 (Reuters) - China's Luxshare Precision Industry Co Ltd (002475.SZ) said on Thursday its cooperation with current clients was normal, in response to a media report that iPhone maker Apple Inc (AAPL.O) had asked suppliers to cut production. The electronics manufacturer said it wanted to clarify a recent report from a Taiwanese media outlet which said that Luxshare had suffered the biggest impact from the Apple request. "There are no special changes or impact to the relevant business of the company mentioned in the report," Luxshare said in its statement. A separate report by the Financial Times on Thursday said Apple is set to sign an order with Luxshare to produce premium iPhone models. Apple and Luxshare did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
