HONG KONG — Hong Kong’s high court on Thursday sentenced a man to 23 years and 10 months in prison for being the mastermind of an alleged plot to attack police with explosives during the city’s pro-democracy and anti-China protests in 2019. Another defendant, Wong Chun-keung, the leader of a group known as the “Dragon Slayers” that was active during the 2019 protests, was sentenced to 13 years and six months imprisonment. The long jail terms come amid a protracted national security clampdown by China in the global financial hub, and is the first time the U.N. anti-terrorism ordinance has been used in Hong Kong since 2002. He was convicted of an alternative charge of conspiring to cause explosions that were likely to endanger life or cause significant property damage. The ruling came less than a week before 45 of Hong Kong’s leading democrats face sentencing in a separate national security case for an alleged subversive plot from 2020.

Adding more activity helped to lower blood pressure even more: 10 to 20 minutes of exercise daily reduced blood pressure enough to lower heart disease risk by about 10%, according to the researchers' estimates. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton sued an El Paso doctor on Tuesday, accusing him of providing transition-related medical care to nearly two dozen minors in violation of state law. Texas enacted a law, Senate Bill 14, last year banning gender-affirming care for anyone under 18. Laws restricting access to transition-related care for minors exist in 26 states, according to the Movement Advancement Project, an LGBTQ think tank. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton sued a Dallas doctor Thursday for allegedly providing transition-related care to nearly two dozen minors in violation of state law. Paxton alleged that Dr. May Chi Lau, who specializes in adolescent medicine, provided hormone-replacement therapy to 21 minors between October 2023 and August for the purpose of transitioning genders. In 2023, Texas enacted a law banning hormone-replacement therapy and other forms of gender-affirming care for minors. Lau’s employer, the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, did not immediately return a request for comment. Paxton’s suit is the first in the nation by an attorney general against an individual doctor for allegedly violating a restriction on transition-related care for minors.

The stimulus measures should have come far sooner, says Lun, but better late than never. Beijing has largely held back on unveiling fiscal measures, which can include the use of taxation or other measures to impact public spending. Another one trillion yuan may be set aside for recapitalizing banks or helping indebted local governments to issue bonds. KAOHSIUNG, Taiwan — A weakened and “weird” Typhoon Krathon slammed into southwestern Taiwan on Thursday, hitting the island with a storm that has killed two people so far and forced it to shut down for a second day with hundreds of flights grounded and financial markets closed. Krathon made landfall as a much weaker category 1 typhoon around midday at the major port city of Kaohsiung. All domestic flights were canceled for a second day, as well as 236 international ones. Typhoons often hit Taiwan’s east coast facing the Pacific, but Krathon is unusual in that it directly hit the west coast. Local media labeled it a “weird” storm for that reason, and because of how it hovered off the coast before reaching land.
