The generation is leading the way when it comes to pet ownership — almost a third of US pet owners are millennials. Across the board, more pet owners are splurging on their animals. In its annual surveys, the American Pet Products Association has found that pet owners have reported spending more on things like treats, food, toys, and clothing each year. While some millennial dog owners are forgoing having children, others are using dogs as training for parenthood. Dog owners can't be blamed entirely for the changing behavior.

We ended up in the medieval town of Loches due to a recommendation from a local. One of my favorite examples of this approach was when my husband and I took a road trip from Paris to Andorra with our son. In Paris, someone from the car hire company recommended we visit Loches, a medieval town in the Loire Valley. The next day, we asked a server where she'd recommend staying within three or four hours south of where we were. Trekking Across Switzerland, Guided by Locals’ Hand-Drawn Maps Nostalgic for a time before ubiquitous connectivity, a writer ditched his phone and relied instead on serendipity — and maps made by people he met along the way. So perhaps the most difficult day was also the day I knew for sure that I would make it — that I’d find my way across Switzerland with nothing but the hand-drawn maps of strangers. The map I’m using was drawn by Susana, a Portuguese woman who married into a local family and now runs a mountain refuge near the village of Grindelwald. Days 9 and 10 43 miles, through the original heart of Switzerland and the turquoise lakes of the canton of Glarus. This is the heart of Switzerland — the original cantons that formed the Old Swiss Confederacy, the precursor to the modern-day country.

To make a stodgy cake is human. To soak that cake in sweet milk is divine. The long and sometimes boozy history of soaked cakes is a varied and delightful category of the human baking experience. Just a few weeks ago, in a small chateau in France, after teaching several baking workshops, I found myself with an excess of brioche. Letting it sit out overnight to dry, then creating a syrup of whatever you choose, so long as it includes rum.
