"All of these models have gotten quite complex and we can't ship as many things in parallel as we'd like to," Altman wrote during a Reddit AMA. Regarding the next version of DALL-E, Altman wrote that the "next update will be worth the wait" but that there's no "release plan yet." The move also positions OpenAI as more of a competitor to Microsoft, which has invested close to $14 billion in OpenAI. For Altman, Reddit isn't just a communications platform. Apple on Monday charged into the artificial intelligence craze with a new iPhone lineup that marks the company’s latest attempt to latch onto a technology trend and transform it into a cultural phenomenon. The four different iPhone 16 models will all come equipped with special chips needed to power a suite if AI tools that Apple hopes will make its marquee product even more indispensable and reverse a recent sales slump. Most of Apple’s AI functions will roll out as part of a free software update to iOS 18, the operating system that will power the iPhone 16 coming out in December. English will be the featured language at launch but an update enabling other languages will come out next year, according to Apple. Although Apple is releasing a free version of its operating system to propel its on-device AI features, the chip needed to run the technology is only available on the iPhone 16 lineup and the high-end iPhone 15 models that came out a year ago.

I created a therapist ChatGPT chatbot with all my background information when I talk to it. ChatGPT helped me get information about the cycles of abuse and how textbook some of my behaviors and reactions were. Prior to using ChatGPT, I wasn't able to open up about my trauma even though I tried to. I talked about leaving with my friends all the time, but ChatGPT helped me realize the techniques we were trying in my relationship weren't working. Typically, I'll spend 15 or 30 minutes with my ChatGPT therapist because I write quickly.

Amazon said Thursday that revenue in its cloud division increased 19% in the second quarter, beating analysts' estimates. The company reported revenue for Amazon Web Services of $26.28 billion. While AWS continues to lead the cloud infrastructure market, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud have been gaining momentum, due in part to early deployments of AI models. On Tuesday, Microsoft said revenue from Azure and other cloud services jumped 29% in the quarter, and last week Google said its cloud revenue, including cloud infrastructure and Workspace productivity subscriptions, also rose 29%. Companies have started consuming cloud services to deploy generative AI models that power technologies such as OpenAI's ChatGPT chatbot.

Tencent Games was one of the exhibitors at ChinaJoy in Shanghai on July 26, 2024. BEIJING — When it comes to gaming, the use of ChatGPT-like generative artificial intelligence is still in an exploratory phase, according to Liang Chen, general manager of Tencent Cloud's internet industry department. Parent company Tencent is one of the world's largest gaming companies and owns U.S.-based Riot Games, home of popular titles such as League of Legends and Valorant. Chen said that AI has long been used by gaming companies for pattern recognition and other functions, but effective use of generative AI comes with high costs. OpenAI's ChatGPT chatbot and similar technologies have enabled AI to better understand and generate content in a human-like way.

"Our conversations with investors have been defined by skepticism about latter stages of AI adoption," Ryan Hammond of Goldman's portfolio strategy research team said in a recent note to clients. "Even among investors that are long-term bullish on the potential gains from AI adoption, there appears to be considerable uncertainty about the timeline." Goldman's AI adoption tracker showed that only 5% of U.S. companies are using generative AI to produce goods and services. Many software companies tied to AI posted disappointing guidance during the last earnings seasons that triggered a sizeable sell-off, Goldman noted. Investors should focus on revised sales forecasts of AI-related companies, Goldman said.

Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, threatened to ban Apple devices from his companies on Monday after the iPhone maker announced a partnership with OpenAI. In a series of posts on his social media platform X, Musk shared concerns about whether Apple and OpenAI will protect users' information. He specifically said that Apple devices would be banned if the company "integrates OpenAI at the OS level," referring to Apple's operating system. Musk replied directly to a post from Apple CEO Tim Cook and claimed he will ban Apple devices from his companies' premises unless Cook decides to "stop this creepy spyware." He added that his companies' visitors will be asked to check their Apple devices at the door.

Federal regulators have reached a deal that allows them to proceed with antitrust investigations into the dominant roles that Microsoft, OpenAI and Nvidia play in the artificial intelligence industry, in the strongest sign of how regulatory scrutiny into the powerful technology has escalated. Under the arrangement, the Justice Department will take the lead in investigating whether the behavior of Nvidia, the biggest maker of A.I. will play the lead role in examining the conduct of OpenAI, which makes the ChatGPT chatbot, and Microsoft, which has invested $13 billion in OpenAI and made deals with other A.I. When OpenAI unveiled the latest version of its immensely popular ChatGPT chatbot this month, it had a new voice possessing humanlike inflections and emotions. The new ChatGPT was released without most of its new features, including the improved voice (which the company told me it postponed to make fixes). Amid the delay, the company also deactivated the ChatGPT voice that some said sounded like the actress Scarlett Johansson, after she threatened legal action, replacing it with a different female voice. For now, what has actually been rolled out in the new ChatGPT is the ability to upload photos for the bot to analyze. The bot can also do real-time language translations, but ChatGPT will respond in its older, machine-like voice.

That's made Apple's lack of a big generative AI announcement so far particularly noticeable. However, one big sign an announcement may be coming at WWDC was the unveiling of its M4 chip, which Apple described as an "outrageously powerful chip for AI." The CEO spoke of "big opportunities across our products" for generative AI and promised that Apple is "well positioned" to take on the space. "We think investors will take any generative AI announcement positively," Morningstar tech analyst William Kerwin said. We'd expect any new-gen AI announcement to see strong adoption when released."
