A Van Gogh can’t be resold.
It can’t be “fenced.” In this particular case, a crime group had wanted to hold the painting hostage, to negotiate for reduced prison sentences.
Brand pointed out, it took a couple of years to get the painting back, even after the thief had been convicted, because nobody wanted to touch it.
