While the majority party has elected their nominee on the first ballot over the past century, this year could be different. Members vote "viva voice," meaning they stand when their names are called by a reading clerk and verbally announce who they are voting for. Members can vote for anyone (even people who are not members of the House), vote present, or not vote at all. If every member doesn't show up, or if some vote present instead of supporting a candidate, that decreases what the majority vote needs to be. Republican leader Kevin McCarthy is struggling to secure the 218 votes he needs to be elected speaker of the House in January. In this game of chicken, if the conservatives don’t blink and McCarthy refuses to back down, it could result in a chaotic floor fight with House members taking multiple votes for speaker — something that has not happened in a century. The House was called to order at noon and the chamber moved to the first order of business: electing the speaker. The House held three more unsuccessful votes for speaker that day before adjourning just after 2 p.m. The date was Feb. 2, 1856, two months after the first speaker vote.

Last week’s election defied expectations. Unprecedented, idiosyncratic state-specific patterns seemed to emerge instead, with Republicans doing well in Florida and New York, Democrats doing well in the Midwest, and election nail-biters unfolding in Arizona and Nevada. But perhaps the most important surprise of this election was how normal it was. None of the apocalyptic predictions about violence, suppression or fraud seemed to have materialized. We witnessed a successful process run by professionals working under incredibly difficult circumstances.
