Which Battleground State Voters Could Sway the Election? It says that in order for Democrats to win, Black voters must make up 30 percent of all voters and at least 30 percent of white voters must vote Democratic. Black voters, who cast nearly a third of the ballots in 2020, overwhelmingly favored Mr. Biden — by almost 90 percent. That’s because educational attainment divides mostly white voters, and many of Nevada’s less-educated voters are not white. Even so, that wasn’t enough for him to overcome the coalition of white voters with a college degree and voters of color who delivered Mr. Biden a victory.

On paper, Vice President Kamala Harris should be feeling hopeful about Wisconsin. The last 40 public polls included in The New York Times polling average of the vital battleground state show her leading in 28, tied in four and trailing former President Donald J. Trump in eight. Ms. Harris, who is set to hold a rally in Madison on Friday evening, was up by four percentage points in the latest survey from Marquette Law School, widely considered the gold standard of Wisconsin polling. The Times polling average has shown her leading every day, albeit narrowly, since Aug. 6. And yet, in what has appeared to be Democrats’ strongest battleground state even when President Biden was still in the race, Democrats, Republicans and even the state’s pollsters can agree on one thing: They don’t fully trust the polling and don’t believe Ms. Harris is ahead by as much as some of the surveys say.

With Harris at the top of the ticket, Democrats now see a chance to refocus voters on the issue and restore their margins among the abortion rights voters who had notably drifted away from Biden. In both the 2020 and 2022 campaigns, voters who backed legal abortion provided overwhelming support to Biden and other Democratic candidates. Across all of those battleground states, Biden this year was performing well below that level with voters who support legal abortion, polls have found. Those abortion rights voters also split about evenly on whether Biden or Trump was better for the economy. “Many of them aren’t single issue abortion voters; they are worried about the economy and inflation, they are worried about immigration,” McLaughlin said.

For now, there’s no question that hardening GOP attitudes on immigration have been critical to Trump’s strong performance through the early primaries. Then, 56% of GOP primary voters said undocumented immigrants should be offered legal status; in last month’s primary, 55% said they should be deported. Immigration ranked as the most important issue for most GOP primary voters in South Carolina, and finished close behind the economy in both Iowa and New Hampshire.
