Mexican artist Teresa Margolles’ “Mil Veces un Instante (A Thousand Times in an Instant)” is a 3.3-metric-ton (3.6-US-ton) cube covered in face masks of 726 trans, nonbinary and gender nonconforming people. It’s the latest artwork placed atop the “Fourth Plinth,” a large stone pedestal in the central London square. The new sculpture evokes a Tzompantli, a rack used in Mesoamerican civilizations to display the skulls of captured enemies and sacrifice victims. A lawyer who represented Boston gangster James “Whitey” Bulger will prosecute Karen Read, whose murder trial in the death of her Boston police officer boyfriend ended with a hung jury, when the case is retried, officials said Wednesday. In a statement, Norfolk County District Attorney Michael Morrissey said he appointed attorney Hank Brennan to lead the effort to retry Read as special assistant district attorney. Morrissey described Brennan as a skilled former prosecutor and a long-time defense attorney with an expertise in complex law enforcement matters. Brennan was a longtime lawyer for Bulger before the crime boss was killed in a federal prison in West Virginia in 2018. The lead prosecutor in the case, assistant district attorney Adam Lally, will remain on the team that will retry Read, according to Morrissey’s statement.

An Alaska man has been indicted on charges that he sent racist and violent threats against six Supreme Court justices and their family members. He's been charged with threatening to assault, kidnap and murder the six justices, as well as some of their family members, and has pleaded not guilty. Anastasiou also allegedly made lynching threats and uses the N-word in statements aimed at a justice identified as "Supreme Court Justice 1" in the indictment, apparently referring to Clarence Thomas, who is Black. Anastasiou is expected to appear in court later Thursday for a detention hearing. Authorities say Ryan Wesley Routh was lying in wait for former President Donald Trump at the West Palm Beach golf course on Sunday with a semi-automatic rifle. Another business owner who was visited by the FBI believed their business may have had surveillance video of Routh leaving the scene, and that business owner says the FBI copied the file containing the video. A third business said that agents visited them for surveillance video after the shooting. Federal charging documents allege that Routh arrived at the golf course at 1:59 a.m. ET the day he was allegedly spotted with a weapon near the course, based on FBI cell phone analysis.

President Joe Biden's student debt forgiveness plan faces another setback as a federal judge extended the temporary restraining order against it on Wednesday. U.S. District Judge Randal Hall, who was appointed by former Republican President George W. Bush, said that Biden's plan would remain blocked for an additional 14 days. The ruling came as the Biden administration was expected to publish its final rule on a revised student loan forgiveness plan in October. The judge first issued a temporary restraining order on Sept. 5 shortly after the lawsuit was filed. Those enrolled in the plan, around 8 million people, do not have to make payments at this time.

A Philadelphia man admitted to reporting a hoax mass shooting and then a bomb threat in retaliation over a fantasy football argument, authorities said Wednesday. "On August 15th a man named (the victim) is headed around oslo and has a shooting planned with multiple people on his side involved. Norwegian authorities spent 900 man hour investigating and disproving that threat, Fish said. “While already being prosecuted for one hoax threat spurred by, of all things, his fantasy football league, Matthew Gabriel inexplicably decided to send another,” U.S. Attorney Jacqueline Romero said. Court documents did not outline the nature of Gabriel's beef with the University of Iowa student and Fish declined to reveal those details.

Shares of Trump Media fell at the opening bell Thursday, with just hours to go until former President Donald Trump is expected to be able to start selling his nearly $2 billion stake. The company, which owns social media platform Truth Social and trades as DJT on the Nasdaq, was down 5% at the market open. Trump Media has acknowledged in regulatory filings that the end of the lockup could spur large sales of the company’s stock, and even the market’s perception of a sell-off could drive down DJT’s stock price. The company’s fortunes are tied up with those of Trump, whose use of Truth Social makes him a main draw to the platform. After soaring in its public trading debut, Trump Media has suffered a monthlong stock slump that has coincided with Trump’s tumultuous presidential campaign against Democratic nominee Kamala Harris.
