CNN —A Florida woman was found guilty of second-degree murder Friday after authorities said she zipped her boyfriend up in a suitcase and left him for dead back in 2020. Sarah Boone, now 47, told authorities her boyfriend got trapped in a suitcase and died during a game of hide-and-seek, court records show. Boone also testified she thought Torres could get out of the suitcase, the affiliate said. She testified in her own defense for almost five hours, CNN affiliate WESH reported. Boone’s attorney said they were very disappointed following the verdict, while the family of Torres was emotional and declined to speak with the media, CNN affiliate WESH reported.

I think a record number of Black and African American voters, Jewish voters, union voters. Asked for comment, the Harris campaign referred to a memo to reporters Sunday pushing back on the GOP suggestion that the vice president's support is eroding among key groups. Trump and Republicans hope to see a big turnout from their base, namely white, non-college-educated, working-class voters. Johnson and his affiliated super PAC, the Congressional Leadership Fund, have raised a combined $266 million for House Republicans this cycle. Democrats are heavily focused on Pennsylvania as well, with all three top House leaders and the Harris campaign making stops here in recent weeks.

One of the country's four masters of wine, Hemming oversees wine programs across Asia for 67 Pall Mall, a private club for wine lovers. Reflecting on his unlikely journey from aspiring actor to wine connoisseur, he shared how he transitioned from managing a wine shop to mastering the complex world of fine wine. As an English literature and theater major in the UK, Hemming initially believed the stage was his calling. But after graduating in 2001, he applied for a job at a wine shop in London. "To even register, you must have a reference from your employer saying that you are working in a wine role," Hemming said, along with a recommendation from another master of wine.

A series of fortuitous eventsWhen the train arrived in Paris, Erin and her seat neighbor went their separate ways, and Erin figured she’d never see him again. It’s called the Generator, and it has a great rooftop bar.’ And I love rooftop bars, so I remembered that.”Erin returned to the US, and she quickly lost touch with her train friend. Jordan figured the reviews were decent, the prices OK – and the rooftop bar looked appealing. “Then, that night, there was a party, an organized event on the rooftop,” Erin recalls. By then, fall had arrived, and Jordan’s summer stint at the rooftop bar was ending.

How Red Lobster choked on its own Endless Shrimp deal
  + stars: | 2024-05-21 | by ( Allison Morrow | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +4 min
First, Red Lobster got screwed by private equity. Back in 2014, the Darden restaurant group spun off Red Lobster to a private equity firm. Thai Union, under Kenny’s direction, elbowed out other shrimp suppliers, “leaving Thai Union with an exclusive deal that led to higher costs to Red Lobster,” according to the filing. And if you’re the exclusive provider of shrimp to America’s biggest seafood chain, what’d be better than making that limited-time all-you-can-eat shrimp deal a permanent menu item? The all-you-can-eat shrimp deal alone didn’t doom Red Lobster, but boy did it do some damage at a time when the chain was already buckling.

Wine touring in the Old WorldFrance Of France's 11 wine regions, Bordeaux, Burgundy (or Bourgogne) and Champagne are the most eminent. The United States California is renowned for wine tasting, though almost every state in the continental U.S. has a wine region or wine tourism area. Visitors can drive between vineyards, bike the Napa Valley Wine Trail, or book a ride on the vintage Napa Valley Wine Train. CNN —A violent hailstorm wreaked havoc on vineyards in Chablis in the famous French wine region of Burgundy Wednesday evening, delivering another weather blow to already hard-hit local Chardonnay winemakers. The extent of the damage was still unclear as winegrowers checked over their plots on Thursday, a representative for the Burgundy wine association told CNN. “We’ve never seen anything like this, it’s dramatic,” Julie Fèvre, a winemaker, told BFM. Some 38 million bottles of Chablis Chardonnay wine are sold every year, generating an estimated $340 million turnover, according to the Burgundy wine association. Around 67% of Chablis wine is exported to foreign markets, the association said.

I'm a sommelier in Italy, and there are a few wines to avoid ordering at bars and restaurants. If you're looking for a nice white, skip chardonnay and order a glass of Greek assyrtiko. After training and working as a sommelier in Italy, I pride myself on being able to find my clients their new favorite drink. But over the years, I've also learned which popular blends to steer clear of when I'm out and about. Here are some types of wine I never order and exciting alternatives I think everyone should be sipping on instead.

The other ingredients — olive oil, salt, pepper, minced garlic, oregano, and fresh thyme — were already in my kitchen. The recipe also called for 1/3 cup of dry white wine.

I dislike getting involved in debates on the stock market when I am enjoying an old-fashion rum punch at a beach bar in the Caribbean, but I couldn't resist interjecting. More may be coming: the last week of November tends to be the strongest week of the month, Ryan Detrick, chief market strategist at Carson Group, has noted. As for earnings, which are the lifeblood for the stock market, forward earnings estimates for the next 12 months stand at record highs.

This is not the first time I’ve made this declaration, but it’s worth noting again as winter approaches. That’s because Chenin is a white wine particularly well-suited to winter drinking. (Yes, even turkey—especially if it’s a Chenin from Vouvray.) A good Chenin can be made sparkling or still, dry or sweet or somewhere in the middle, though I tend to drink its dry versions the most. A top Chenin costs a fraction of what a top Chardonnay goes for—also worth considering when stocking up for holiday entertaining.

CNN —Belgium has destroyed a shipment of American beer after taking exception to its maker’s slogan that it was “The Champagne of Beers.”Belgian customs crushed the 2,352 cans of Miller High Life beer earlier this week, reasoning that they were improperly labeled as Champagne. The move came after a trade association for the Champagne industry complained that the term should be used only on bottles of sparkling wine, made using a traditional method in Champagne, France. By convention, true Champagne – as in, the French sparkling wine – can only be made using Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier grapes. The Comité Champagne, a joint trade association for the Champagne industry, requested the destruction of the American beers, arguing that the label “The Champagne of Beers” infringed on the protected designation of “Champagne”. According to its website, it began to use the slogan “The Champagne of Bottle Beer” three years later, shortening it to “The Champagne of Beers” in 1969.
The 2023 stock market has a big valuation problem

I noted yesterday that the average of 17 strategists have S & P 500 earnings down 6% next year. That is an earnings recession. It's a modest earnings recession (severe earnings recessions can see earnings drop 20% or more) but it's an earnings recession. If earnings really are going to be down 6% next year, then the S & P 500 is trading at about 19 times 2023 earnings estimates. If, for example, you want to argue that the S & P 500 should rise 10% next year to 4,400, that would be a multiple of 21.
WASHINGTON, Dec 1 (Reuters) - U.S. President Joe Biden rolled out the red carpet on Thursday for celebrities, lawmakers, and titans of industry at the White House's first state dinner in honor of French President Emmanuel Macron. The guest list included actress Jennifer Garner and her daughter with Ben Affleck, Violet; singer John Legend and model Chrissy Teigen; "Vogue" editor Anna Wintour; and director Baz Luhrmann. On Thursday night, Biden and his wife, Jill, welcomed the Macrons back to the White House for the dinner after diplomatic meetings earlier in the day. Biden is hosting Macron at the first state visit since the U.S. leader took office in early 2021. WASHINGTON, Nov 30 (Reuters) - French President Emmanuel Macron addressed U.S. lawmakers from both political parties on Wednesday and pushed back over new American subsidies that are riling European leaders, according to a participant in a closed-door meeting. The menu will feature some American specialties, butter poached lobster from Maine, American Osetra caviar, and beef and potatoes followed by cheeses from Oregon, California and Wisconsin. All this will be washed down by wines from California - Newton "Unfiltered" Chardonnay and Anakota "Knights Valley" Cabernet Sauvignon, along with a California sparkling wine with French roots, Roederer Estate Brut Rose. Serving American-made wine to official French visitors is not original to Biden. Pinot Blanc is the latter. It’s not Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc, the more-popular grapes that a couple of retailers recommended as alternatives when I recently went shopping for the more obscure Pinot Blanc. It’s not Chardonnay, either, though some winemakers treat it as such. Pinot Blanc—aka Pinot Bianco, aka Weissburgunder, aka Klevner, depending on where it’s grown—is commonplace but so underrated it isn’t even mentioned in some of my wine reference books. And yet, judging from my recent Pinot Blanc tasting, the really good examples are worth tracking down.
