CNN —German Chancellor Olaf Scholz faces a confidence vote on Monday he is expected to lose, paving the way for a snap election early next year . Scholz initially announced that he planned to hold a confidence vote on January 15, but he came under immediate pressure from the center-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party to hold them sooner. If a snap election is called, polls point to the conservative CDU, the party of former long-serving chancellor Angela Merkel, being on track to win. Germany’s economy shrank last year for the first time since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. Germany’s last snap election was in 2005.

CNN —Donald Trump once publicly speculated that Time would never name him the news magazine’s “Person of the Year.”Now, the honor will be bestowed on him twice. Trump’s 2024 selection mirrors his first recognition in 2016, when Time named him Person of the Year after his unexpected rise to the presidency. Despite the magazine’s dwindling circulation, Time’s Person of the Year remains an annual cultural touchstone and the distinction has become an obsession of sorts for Trump throughout the years. Despite his regular criticism of the media, Trump has regularly granted access to legacy outlets – including Time. Every US president since Franklin Delano Roosevelt, except Gerald Ford, has been named Person of the Year at least once.

Former German chancellor Angela Merkel has called the influence of tech billionaires such as Elon Musk over U.S. President-elect Donald Trump a "huge concern". In an interview with the news magazine Der Spiegel published on Friday ahead of the release of her memoir, Merkel said the job of politics was ultimately to balance the interests of ordinary and powerful citizens. "If this ultimate recourse is influenced too strongly by companies, whether through capital power or technological capabilities, then that is an unprecedented challenge for all of us," she said. She cited the example of Musk, chief executive of Tesla and SpaceX, who was tapped by Trump to co-lead a new Department of Government Efficiency that the incoming president has indicated will operate outside the confines of government. "If a person like him [Musk] owns 60% of all satellites orbiting in space, then that has to be a huge concern for us in addition to the political issues," Merkel said.
