Last Friday, Ho took his company, NIP Group, public on the Nasdaq stock exchange. NIP Group makes money from live streams — both of esports and from third-party influencers — and event production and its esports arm. NIP Group plans to explore esports real estate, digital collectibles, and esports training camps, among other strategies, the company said in a filing. Before the duo cofounded NIP Group, Ho was the chief marketing officer of iDreamsky Games, one of the largest game publishers in China. Though billed as an esports company, NIP Group made the bulk of its revenue last year primarily from managing 36,000 online entertainers — with money coming largely from fees on their live streams.

For Mother’s Day, The Times asked readers to tell us about the mother figures in their lives. KELLY SANDOVAL, 48, SQUAMISH, B.C., CANADAI come from a multicultural background, but the Puerto Rican side of the family lived far away. When I showed up, Linda, my host mother, picked me up from the bus stop and made me tea and crumpets. If I had a nightmare and woke my mother up, she would tell me to climb into bed with Rita. During that year I also moved into my first apartment, away from the guidance of my mother.

CNN —A major fire ravaged the 80-year-old iconic Al-Ahram Studio in Cairo, causing extensive damage and spreading to adjacent buildings on Saturday morning, according to the Egyptian state news website Al-Ahram. The fire, which took firefighters over five hours to extinguish and prompted an evacuation of nearby residential buildings, erupted just hours after the completion of filming for a Ramadan television series, Al-Ahram added. Videos circulating on Egyptian media sites showed the studio site and the buildings around it fully affected by the fire. The studio had been instrumental in producing countless Egyptian films and television series, marking it as a significant cultural asset. Egypt’s Public Prosecutor has launched an investigation into the cause of the fire at one of the Arab world’s oldest film production houses, state media outlets report.

Lebanon's central bank to phase out Sayrafa exchange platform
  + stars: | 2023-07-17 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
Beirut, July 17 (Reuters) - Lebanon’s central bank will decommission the controversial exchange platform known as Sayrafa after governor Riad Salameh’s 30-year tenure ends this month, one of the institution’s vice governors told Reuters on Monday. "It's about the way Sayrafa will be phased out," he said. The exchange platform was set up in May 2021, 18 months into Lebanon's economic meltdown. Chahine said the platform would be replaced by an "exchange rate determination electronic platform" set up through international providers. The World Bank described it as one of the "weak, and often counterproductive, policies implemented by the Lebanese authorities since the outbreak of the crisis."

Denver startup Cosmic Aerospace is developing a fully electric plane to reduce air pollution from regional flights. The aim is to build an electric plane that operates without any emissions but that can still fly for just over 600 miles. Alex Teng, a partner at 50 Years, told CNBC his firm invested in Cosmic partly owing to the cofounders' experience in aviation. The fund also liked that Cosmic is tackling a problem that other developers of electric planes and air taxis have not solved yet -- getting beyond the short hop flight. "Electric aviation has always suffered from a range problem," Teng said, "but my average flight is over 500 miles personally.
