All kinds of startups are rushing into the AI inference market. AdvertisementJared Quincy Davis and his AI computing startup Foundry sell inference. And cost in inference computing is even more important than in training, Groq cofounder Jonathan Ross recently told BI. In other words, "it turns out, when you make inference cheaper, people decide to do a lot more inference," Davis said. He agrees the next few years will be wildly competitive for inference providers, but he believes the winners will be decided on merit.

G42 can pick up $500 million more in Cerebras shares if it commits to spend $5 billion on the company's computing clusters. The major Wall Street banks, for their part, are finding other ways to play in the burgeoning AI infrastructure market. There are signs across AI models, chips, and new form factors that the market is getting frothy. Investors spent the summer wondering if top AI stocks could continue to justify soaring valuations in the face of absent returns from their massive AI spending. Now, signs have emerged that they're not yet done with generative AI mania. OpenAI reaches dizzying new heightsSam Altman's OpenAI secured a $157 billion valuation after raising $6.6 billion in its latest funding round. In short, a lossmaking startup must justify its $157 billion valuation.

Last year, Son — who says he uses ChatGPT every day — is said to have met with Sam Altman, the A.I. That included talks for Son to provide up to $1 billion in funding to Altman and Jony Ive, the designer behind the iPhone, to create an A.I.-powered replacement for the smartphone. Bloomberg reported that SoftBank had hoped to be part of OpenAI’s last fund-raising round, but was instead wait-listed. Son is also trying to organize the auto industry around the use of A.I. Liang told Business Insider he expects 90% of AI computing workloads will be in inference in the not-too-distant future. AdvertisementThat's why several startups are charging aggressively into the inference market — emphasizing where they might outperform the goliath in the space. Speed is an important factor when multiple AI models talk to each other and waiting for an answer can dampen the magic of generative AI. The number of tokens per second that can be consumed (when a prompt goes in) and generated (when a response comes out) is a common metric for AI computing speed. That continues a trend from 2023, when generative AI companies raised $25.9 billion for the full year, up more than 200% from 2022. The average round for AI companies is 140% bigger this year compared with last, the data shows, while for non-AI companies the increase is only 10%. Most venture investors are bullish on the potential for generative AI to eventually create big returns at the application layer. John-David Lovelock, an analyst at Gartner and a 35-year veteran of the IT industry, sees a big opportunity for generative AI in the enterprise. Yet, in 2024, only 1% of the trillion dollars spent on software will be from businesses spending on generative AI products, he said.

Lam aims to change that with NEX, which develops AI image tools for entertainment, gaming, and marketing. Founded in late 2023, the company recently raised a $3.5 million seed round led by Foundation Capital, with participation from Point72 Ventures. NEX does this by enabling users to generate images inspired by other images, not just text inputs, in a "real-time canvas." The startup's tech can also tailor the AI models based on a customer's existing data, a process called finetuning, or even develop models from scratch. Lam's vision for NEX is to be the "visual media tool for the AI era."

The rollout of Nvidia's next-generation of AI chips, Blackwell, is going to be delayed according to media and industry analyst reports. Smaller cloud firms that have built their businesses on Nvidia chips could be affected by the delay too. Each new generation of AI chips promises step changes in computing capacity, speed and efficiency, allowing for faster computations and larger models. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, Nvidia's manufacturing partner, is using a relatively new process to manufacture the Blackwell chips. Some Blackwell chips have begun shipping to customers and production will still increase in the second half of the year.

Few would envy the task of competing against market leader Nvidia, which has between 70% and 90% market share, according to Mizuho Securities. Still, Nvidia gets most of the hype — and the revenue. Though the company will not confirm it, The Information reported last month that Cerebras has confidentially filed for an IPO. Still, Feldman expects that even consumer-directed AI models will grow larger, and larger models need faster chips. Competing with that mindshare is an uphill battle as Nvidia faces more competition and goes on defense.

So far, the only part of Earth AI seems hell-bent on dominating is the power grid. AI data centers are doubling the pace of electricity demand growth in the US to the extent that demand could exceed supply in just two years without action, according to Bernstein Research. The potential shortfall could mean higher prices for the computing power AI developers of all sizes are clamoring for, along with ample opportunity for investors willing to build up supply. How are AI companies planning aheadIt's not just the total power needed for AI computing infrastructure, it's the unique cadence of the power need and the cooling AI chips require. Amazon is clearing some of these hurdles by colocating some data centers with nuclear power sites.

CNN —The world’s first minister dedicated to developing artificial intelligence (AI) strategy is already becoming embroiled in a global power struggle for tech supremacy. By opening up the technology, Abu Dhabi is positioning itself as an ally to developing nations that don’t have the resources to build their own AI tools. A 2-year-old startup founded by Harvard dropouts has just raised $120 million in venture funding to try and build a competitive chip and take on Nvidia in artificial intelligence. Co-founder and CEO Gavin Uberti said that as AI develops, most of the technology's power-hungry computing requirements will be filled by customized, hard-wired chips called ASICs. "We're making the biggest bet in AI," Uberti said in an interview. Other chip startups taking on Nvidia include Cerebras Systems, which is building a physically larger AI chip, and Tenstorrent, which is using a trendy technology called RISC-V to build AI chips.
