After a summer of turmoil, Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft is finally home. The capsule undocked from the International Space Station without astronauts onboard on Friday at 6:04 p.m. Its smooth journey back suggests that the two NASA astronauts it carried to the space station could probably have flown home safely on the spacecraft. But the Starliner then remained parked at the space station for months as engineers on the ground assessed how to safely bring it back to Earth. Wilmore and Williams will remain on the space station into the new year then fly back in February on a SpaceX capsule.

BEIJING — China's property struggles and U.S. sanctions have significantly affected some of its cities, even as others benefit from Beijing's tech push, Milken Institute's best performing cities China index showed Tuesday. Since 2015, the index has studied China's large- and mid-sized cities for their economic vibrancy and growth prospects. The index looked at a group of 33 large cities and a group of 217 small cities, then ranked them separately. Historically, Wong pointed out, having control of Zhengzhou, Hefei, and Wuhan have been critical to ensuring control of the country. BEIJING — Eastern China is baking under unseasonably high temperatures, with the excessive heat expected to linger in mega coastal cities in the highly industrialized provinces of Jiangsu and Zhejiang for up to 10 more days. In the east and northwest of China, temperatures as high as 43.9 degrees Celsius (111.02 degrees Fahrenheit) have scorched Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Shanghai, Anhui and Xinjiang in recent days, state broadcaster CCTV said. The city of 12.5 million people is expected to swelter under temperatures exceeding 104F through Sunday. Jiangsu’s observatory issued a red warning for heat on Sunday after high temperatures that had persisted for more than a week further intensified. Hangzhou is expected to see 10 straight days of above 104F weather, breaking its record of eight days in 2013.

Typhoon Gaemi is expected to strengthen into a super typhoon before making landfall on Taiwan’s northeastern coast Wednesday evening. There have also been complaints from residents in Wuhan about traffic jams, as driverless cars fail to respond to traffic lights. Uncertainty over the safety and reliability of driverless cars has cast a long shadow over the industry in the US. CNN —A Chinese rocket crashed after being accidentally launched during a ground test Sunday, its company Space Pioneer said in a statement. The crash happened when the first stage of the Tianlong-3 rocket detached from its launch pad during a test, due to structural failure. “Due to the structural failure of the connection between the rocket body and the test platform, the first-stage rocket was separated from the launch pad,” Space Pioneer, also known as Beijing Tianbing Technology, said. Space Pioneer, a leading company in the commercial rocket sphere, specializes in liquid-propellant rockets. In April 2023, it successfully launched its Tianlong-2 rocket, making the company China’s first commercial launch operator to send a liquid carrier rocket into space and successfully enter orbit, according to state media.

Nio shares also helped boost the broader Hang Seng index , which jumped 2% by midday trading. "The deliveries consisted of 8,817 premium smart electric SUVs, and 6,803 premium smart electric sedans," the company said in a statement on Wednesday. Nio has delivered 45,673 vehicles so far this year, 21.2% higher than the same period a year earlier. The fire broke out around 11 p.m. Friday evening local time at Yingcai School near the city of Nanyang, Henan province, Xinhua reported. Local authorities are investigating the cause of the fire, the report said, adding that a “person in charge of the school” had been detained.
