“I think a very strong argument could be made that in those situations, the Alien Enemies Act can be employed,” he says. French nationals were the original target lawmakers had in mind when they passed the Alien Enemies Act. Buyenlarge/Archive Photos/Getty ImagesWhen has the Alien Enemies Act been used before? The Alien Enemies Act does allow individuals to bring lawsuits challenging their detention, Reisz says. Some Democratic lawmakers have tried to repeal the Alien Enemies Act in recent years.

If he wins the election in November, he has pledged to follow a similar course on another contentious policy proposal: ending birthright citizenship. Under Trump’s proposal, at least one parent would need to be a citizen or legal resident for a child to receive birthright citizenship. Trump had pledged to end birthright citizenship when first running for president in 2015 and he raised it again in 2018. Opponents of birthright citizenship say that language means citizenship is denied to anyone whose parents are not legally in the country. Sometimes relevant information could be hard to determine, such as if the immigration status of an absent parent is not known to the other.

She knows there’s a bigger pool of experienced workers out there, but she can’t hire them because they are undocumented immigrants. The coalition argues Biden can do more through executive action under current law, including by expanding work permits to spouses of US citizens. “Everything he is saying isn’t true,” Democratic Republic of Congo spokesperson Patrick Muyaya Katembwe told CNN in a text message on Thursday. Facts First: Trump’s claims are baseless. And federal figures show that there is no “very big” influx of Congolese migrants of any kind, let alone former prisoners in particular. Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, keeps making claims about emptied Congolese prisons as he criticizes President Joe Biden’s handling of immigration. Official federal data shows that Congolese migrants in general, not ex-prisoners in particular, represent a tiny fraction of overall arrivals.

Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's Analytics, said the increase in foreign-born workers is "taking pressure off the economy." The growth in foreign-born workers comes amid a contentious immigration policy debate in the U.S. Immigrants' share of the labor force has increased since 1996, when the Bureau of Labor Statistics began collecting such data. A growing population and labor force are key components of a healthy economy and the nation's ability to pay its bills, economists said. In other words, the economy is both absorbing immigrants and generating job opportunities for U.S.-born workers, the institute said.

But with Mr. Trump’s intervention persuading congressional Republicans to abandon the border deal that they themselves had demanded, Mr. Biden finally has an opportunity to shift from defense to offense. “Joe Biden blamed President Trump for the border crisis that Biden himself created,” said Karoline Leavitt, a spokeswoman for the former president. Mr. Trump made clear that he saw the deal not as a solution but a threat to his bid to reclaim his office. Image Mr. Trump ridiculed the idea that Mr. Biden could deflect blame after three years of failing to secure the border. For three years, Republicans had a clear story line when it came to the border — Mr. Biden either intentionally or incompetently opened the floodgates.

But immigration policy reform could be one solution, some experts say. In 2022, foreign-born U.S. residents — including legally admitted immigrants, refugees, temporary residents and undocumented immigrants — represented about 18% of U.S. workers, up from 17.4% in 2021, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. A pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants would offer eligible workers better education and employment opportunities while boosting federal tax revenue, Vimo said. Reform could offer 'huge benefits' to tax baseDepending on the scope of changes, immigration policy reform could provide "huge benefits" to the U.S. tax base and economy, said Silva Mathema, director for immigration policy at the Center for American Progress. In a 2021 report, the organization modeled the economic impact of four scenarios involving a pathway to legalization and citizenship for undocumented immigrants.

The Afghan man speaks only Farsi, but he wasn't worried about representing himself in U.S. immigration court. Mohammad said he was later shocked to learn that he had waived his right to appeal the decision. ____For his April 27 hearing, Mohammad submitted photos of his injuries from the 2016 suicide bombing that killed hundreds at a peaceful demonstration of mostly Hazaras. ___Former immigration judge Jeffrey Chase, who reviewed the transcript, said he was surprised John-Baptiste waived Mohammad’s right to appeal and that the Board of Immigration Appeals upheld that decision. But Andrew Arthur, another former immigration judge, said John-Baptiste ruled properly.

How we searched for proof of Trump’s storyCNN conducted a broad search for any proof for Trump’s story. These articles did not mention anything about South American mental health facilities being emptied under President Joe Biden, nor feature any quote from a doctor at any such facility. We then reached out to a pro-Trump super PAC asking for evidence for Trump’s “mental institution” story, but a spokesperson didn’t respond. We next turned to two groups that advocate for reduced immigration, the Center for Immigration Studies and the Federation for American Immigration Reform, which would be good candidates to be aware of any such evidence. As a last resort, we posted Trump’s quotes on Twitter and invited the public to try to find support for them.
