We had an epic ice storm that resulted in a branch the size of a Mini Cooper crashing onto our Loll table. Loll Designs furniture was a bit more than I wanted to spend. The price feels worth-it considering it’s so durable that I’ll never have the hassle or expense of buying another patio dining table ever again.

I encountered another variation on this theme during my annual stay at a Jewish summer bungalow colony. The colony’s social director introduced himself with a song, set to a klezmer-like tune, in one stanza of which he sang about how his parents and older relatives hated that he had decided to become a social director. A social director! A social director! Don’t tell us our boy is a social director!

Last fall, Ms. Harden, 64, wrapped filming on “Knox Goes Away,” a thriller with Michael Keaton and Al Pacino that will make its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September. This fall, she is reprising her role as the acerbic reporter Maggie Brener in the third season of Apple TV’s “The Morning Show,” alongside Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston. But while Ms. Harden, who won a best supporting actress Oscar for her role as Lee Krasner in the 2000 film “Pollock,” also has a home in Los Angeles, she spends most of her time off here in upstate New York. Picture yourself on a sojourn in the Catskill Mountains of New York. Then again, with the variety of games on hand at nearly every one of the Catskills’ newest wave of stylish resorts, there should be more than one option that tickles your fancy. The influence of New York City, Brooklyn in particular, has been palpable in the Catskills — about 100 miles northwest of the metro area — for years. About a decade ago, indie hotels like the Graham & Co. in Phoenicia and Foxfire Mountain House in Mount Tremper imported urban cool to the country with their Moroccan poufs, Tivoli radios and linen bedding. It was where one of the country’s earliest resorts, ‌the Catskill Mountain House, made its home in 1824, followed by hundreds of others.
