As the president isolates at his beach house with COVID-19, his team is under mounting pressure, with top Democrats reportedly pushing for him to drop out. This morning's defectors join 20 other House Democrats and two senators who have called on the president to step aside. In his opinion piece entitled, "It's time for Joe Biden to pass the torch," Casten said that he believes Biden will lose the general election. Many believe that Harris is best-positioned to become the Democratic nominee should Biden step aside. Illustrating the persistent divides within the Democratic party, Garcia is a part of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, whose fundraising apparatus endorsed Biden this morning.

WASHINGTON — A group of Democrats are raising concerns as to whether companies that received federal funding for semiconductors used the money to support stock buybacks - and criticizing their own party over how the awards are given. Raimondo has stated that CHIPS funding is not meant to pad companies' bottom lines or support stock buybacks. But lawmakers urged her to go further, and ban stock buybacks for companies that receive CHIPS funds. About $33 billion of funding from the CHIPS Act has been allocated, mostly to major companies. It also said decisions on buybacks were independent from any funds released through the CHIPS Act.

Banks help fund the vast majority of renewable energy projects through tax equity investments, which allow the banks to benefit from federal tax credits for renewable energy. Currently, renewable energy draws $18 billion to $20 billion annually through tax equity investments, according to the American Council on Renewable Energy. "Many people joke that we're on the 'solar-coaster,'" Torres said about the ups and downs of renewable energy. The higher capital requirements for renewable energy projects in Basel III puts the regulation on a collision course with the Biden administration's push for cleaner and greener energy sources. "The clean energy industry's experience with tax equity investments does not warrant such a radical change," the group's letter read.

Jackson is not the only House representative who has both taken advantage of the popular app and voted for the bill that could ban it. Some of these representatives actively use the app to boost their campaigns, while others use it for office communications. Some members who voted in favor of the bill believe the US should be able to regulate the technology. The question of a banA few of the representatives who voted in favor of the bill have emphasized that it is not meant to be a ban of TikTok. The protest was organized by three advocacy groups and held in an area near the U.S. Capitol. Protesters linked arms in front of the DNC building's entrance, where some sang: "Which side are you on?" "One person has been arrested for assault on an officer," Capitol Police said on social media. A DNC spokesperson said officials were monitoring the situation outside the DNC headquarters and were in touch with U.S. Capitol and local Washington police. Jewish Voice for Peace wrote on social media that the protesters had gathered to lay out candles for Palestinians killed during Israel's bombardment and to call for a ceasefire.

Israeli police said in an Oct. 10 statement that it had frozen several crypto accounts that were used to solicit donations for Hamas. Reuters reported in May that Israel had seized around 190 crypto accounts at crypto exchange Binance since 2021, including dozens it said were owned by Palestinian firms connected to Hamas. Hamas uses a global financing network to funnel support from charities and friendly nations, including by using cryptocurrencies, Reuters reported on Monday. The lawmakers requested that the Biden administration provide estimates on the value of crypto assets that remain in Hamas-controlled wallets, how much of Hamas’ operations are funded through crypto, and any information it has on the actors facilitating the sending of crypto to and from Hamas and other militant groups. Even if he gets immense GOP congressional support to become speaker, Trump also appears like the very last person who'd even want the position. US President Donald Trump speaks in the Brady Briefing Room at the White House in Washington, DC on November 5, 2020. AdvertisementAdvertisementAs president, Trump was free to hire and fire staffers, counsel, and his cabinet at any point he wanted. As a speaker but not a member of Congress, Trump would have literally no ability to vote on any pieces of legislation. Let's imagine, for a minute, that Trump's both interested in the position and can somehow manage to convince GOP members to take McCarthy's spot.

Three Democratic lawmakers are pressing Elon Musk on his social media platform's "hostile stance" toward independent research efforts after X, formerly known as Twitter, sued a nonprofit research group that found an increase in hate speech after the billionaire's takeover. The lawmakers pointed to X's recent lawsuit against the Center for Countering Digital Hate, after the nonprofit found an increase in hate speech on the platform in the wake of Musk's takeover. This time, they added a question about whether X had successfully reduced hate speech and extremist content on its platform and if that had been verified by any third parties. The company added that values of platform safety and free expression are not in conflict with one another. X also alleged that CCDH had scraped its platform, in violation of its terms of service.

House Democrats release wave of bank reform bills
  + stars: | 2023-06-21 | by ( Chelsey Cox | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +7 min
WASHINGTON — House Democrats on Wednesday will release a slate of reform bills in response to the recent bank failures that triggered the worst crisis for the sector since 2008. "The failures of Silicon Valley Bank, Signature Bank, and First Republic Bank make clear that it is past time for legislation aimed at strengthening the safety and soundness of our banking system and enhancing bank executive accountability," she said. President Joe Biden called for these actions shortly after the FDIC took over SVB and Signature Bank in March. The bill would have prevented SVB bank executives from cashing out after repeated warnings by regulators, according to Democrats. Neither Signature Bank nor SVB had a bank holding company before they collapsed.

Had a federal paid leave policy been in place, many of those women may have been able to stay employed, she said. "Imagine if, during the pandemic, we had had a national paid leave program," Gillibrand said. The Family and Medical Insurance Leave Act, or FAMILY Act, was reintroduced by lawmakers including Gillibrand and Rep. Rosa DeLauro, D-Conn., with the goal of creating the first paid national family and medical leave program. "It is a reasonable, pragmatic way to get to paid family leave," Duckworth, who is a co-sponsor of the bill, told CNBC.com in an interview. The Education Support Professionals Family Leave Act would provide education support workers such as school bus drivers with unpaid leave under FMLA.
Twitter signed a voluntary agreement in June with the EU related to the DSA committing to "empowering the research community" through means including sharing datasets about disinformation with researchers. The EU law would require platforms with over 45 million EU users to respond to EU-vetted researcher proposals. THE WORK OF THE CONSORTIUMThe research consortium was formed in response to backlash against Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election. Twitter had been preparing to disclose at least a dozen new datasets to researchers before then, the former employees said. If the research consortium is eliminated, "we will be returning to the 2017 era of limited shared communication about malicious state actor activity," said Renée DiResta, research manager at Stanford Internet Observatory.
Former FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried wasn't the only company executive who put big money behind campaigns aligned with the Democratic Party. Singh donated $8 million to federal campaigns in the 2022 election cycle, and all of it went to Democrats, according to the nonpartisan OpenSecrets. He was among a handful of former senior officials at FTX who were deeply involved with financing the 2022 midterms. Two years later, Singh donated $1 million to Future Forward USA, a PAC that backed President Joe Biden's 2020 run for president, records show. Singh, who was among the FTX leaders initially fired after the company collapsed, did not return repeated requests for comment.
