The actor has to be very comfortable and be able to do all the tricks and all the lucha. But then again, with Cassandro in mind, it had to be a whole statement with fashion. I had to do a lot of research because I wanted to sort of grab what Cassandro used to wear and make it really cinematic, so it was a little bit stylized. And that’s the way Cassandro is born. And Cassandro is not from Mexico City — he’s from the border of Juárez and El Paso.

☆ ‘Cassandro’ Review: Love and Lucha Libre

In conversations with Sabrina, Saúl toggles between English and Spanish, reserving the latter for colloquialisms or teasing, and the mixture gives their dialogue an organic rhythm. He uses the same blend of languages with his lover, Gerardo (Raúl Castillo), a married luchador with kids whom Saúl sees in secret. and AIDS panic was at its shrillest, and although the real-life Cassandro was sometimes rebuffed by homophobic opponents, the movie never mentions the epidemic. “Don’t you think he’s sexy?” Saúl says, referring to Cassandro as if he were a third person who might join them. The trouble is that lucha libre, built on glitz, is anything but naturalistic.

Over a holiday weekend dedicated to labor, this year’s Telluride Film Festival attendees couldn’t help being reminded of striking workers: the members of SAG-AFTRA, the television and film actors’ union currently in a standoff with the Hollywood studios. Vivid, intimate or both, the variety and quality of these performances made awards talk unavoidable. (Bill Pence and Luddy died after long illnesses in the last year.) Witness Netflix’s push on behalf of “Nyad” and “Rustin.” Together with the overlapping Venice Film Festival, it remains the gateway into awards season. In a long-ago interview, the director Mike Nichols cautioned a nascent film reviewer to not mistake the dancer for the dance.
