The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau on Thursday issued a finalized version of a rule saying it will soon supervise nonbank firms that offer financial services likes payments and wallet apps. That would include payments services from Apple, Google and Amazon, as well as fintech firms including PayPal and Block and peer-to-peer services Venmo and Zelle. While the CFPB already had some authority over digital payment companies because of its oversight of electronic fund transfers, the new rule allows it to treat tech companies more like banks. “Digital payments have gone from novelty to necessity and our oversight must reflect this reality,” said CFPB Director Rohit Chopra. The CFPB said the rule will take effect 30 days after its publication in the Federal Register.

People who have used Cash App accounts may be entitled to receive up to $2,500 each as part of a $15 million settlement related to a data breach involving the popular payments and investment platform, according to court documents and the company. The exposure of sensitive information for more than eight million users of Cash App Investing was revealed in a regulatory filing in 2022 by Block, its parent company. The data was exposed when a former employee downloaded corporate reports after leaving the company, according to the filing. A second breach involving more customers took place in 2023 with Cash App’s person-to-person payment services after the defendants failed to take security measures, according to a consolidated class-action complaint filed in February in United States District Court for the Northern District of California. There are two ways to wire money: through a bank or through a wire service. How wire transfers workThe process of initiating a wire transferWire transfers typically come in two forms: a transfer between banks or through a money service, like Western Union. In general, a bank account wire transfer tends to cost less than using a service like Western Union. A wire transfer is a secure, electronic transfer of funds from one bank account to another. It's always good practice to review the recipient's information before initiating a wire transfer, and only send money to people you trust because it's difficult to reverse or cancel a transfer.

A former diversity manager at Facebook and Nike was sentenced to five years and three months in prison for stealing more than $5 million from those companies that had been earmarked for DEI initiatives, federal prosecutors said. Georgia resident Barbara Furlow-Smiles, who pleaded guilty to wire fraud in the case in December, stole more than $4.9 million from Facebook "utilizing a scheme involving fraudulent vendors, fake invoices, and cash kickbacks," Atlanta U.S. Attorney Ryan Buchanan said in a statement. "After being terminated from Facebook, she brazenly continued the fraud as a DEI leader at Nike, where she stole another six-figure sum from their diversity program," Buchanan said. Furlow-Smiles, 38, used the money she stole "to fund a luxury lifestyle in California, Georgia and Oregon," according to Buchanan's office, which had asked a judge to sentence her to 6½ years. She was a lead strategist and global head of employee resource groups and diversity engagement at Facebook, the subsidiary of Meta.
