In today’s edition, senior national political reporter Sahil Kapur examines how the political fight over Obamacare was reignited this week. The Obamacare wars return to the campaign trailBy Sahil KapurObamacare has re-entered the chat. Also this week, Trump’s running mate, Sen. JD Vance, raised eyebrows by rewriting the history of Trump’s attempts to repeal Obamacare when he was president. Meanwhile, Barack Obama will make his first appearance on the campaign trail this fall next week in Pittsburgh at an event for Harris.

Outside of the ABC27 news station where Casey and McCormick debated, a slew of people aligned with Casey’s campaign held signs calling McCormick an out-of-state candidate. McCormick attempted to deflect the line of attack on the debate stage by arguing Casey has little show for his long career in public office. “When you don’t have a record to run on, which Senator Casey does not, you attack your opponent,” McCormick shot back. When Vice President Kamala Harris replaced Biden as the Democratic nominee, McCormick said Casey quickly changed his tune. “Senator Casey said, ‘Kamala Harris is great!’” McCormick said.

John Halpin Courtesy John HalpinProgressive activists have decided to use this interlude to attack Biden for his centrist positions on immigration, energy policy and the Israel-Hamas war, in particular. Like the senators from his birth state, Biden should ignore these threats from the left and stand up strongly for his vital center perspective. Looking at Michigan specifically, the threat of Arab Americans tanking Biden must also be put in wider perspective. Even with these larger trends in the state, the authors find: “In Dearborn, Dearborn Heights, Hamtramck, and Livonia — the Michigan cities with the highest proportion of Arab American voters — Biden defeated Trump by a combined 38,000 or so votes. Democratic support for more moderate proposals backed by Biden is even higher: Three-quarters of Democrats support a plan to increase the number of immigration judges to speed up action on asylum claims.

Others are calling for larger foundations to help grantees if they are sued or are offering legal assistance themselves. The Council on Foundations, which supports philanthropic foundations and provides legal resources to its members to help them consider potential legal risks, submitted an amicus brief in the case supporting the Fearless Fund's First Amendment argument. “If you’re committed to DEI or race-conscious or race-based giving, you should not back down on your priorities. We’re funding homelessness or employment or the wealth gap,” she said as examples of changes in wording funders have made. The Black Freedom Fund, which was founded in 2021 to fund Black community organizations in California, has started a legal defense fund for its grantees for precisely that reason.

One strategy, known as buying "subject-to," allowed her to bypass a down payment and inherit a relatively low interest rate for her second property. According to Casey, subject-to deals aren't all that common, mostly because of a lack of understanding about how they work, even among real estate professionals. He can take that money from the escrow if she misses a mortgage payment. "I don't necessarily care about the purchase price; I care about your interest rate. I care about not having to put down a down payment, Casey continued.

AdvertisementUsing 'subject-to' financing to bypass a down payment and inherit a low interest rateWhile researching creative financing, Casey learned more and more about "subject-to loans," when the buyer takes over the existing financing. This was a major advantage for Casey, who didn't have much cash on hand when she was looking to buy her second property. Another benefit of subject-to for the buyer, especially in a high-interest-rate environment, is that they could inherit a low interest rate. In Casey's case, she inherited the seller's 4.5% rate when rates were hovering around 8%, she said.

The investors deserved to lose their shirts; greed and stupidity got the better of them.

This year's hot girl summer was led by the women who propped up the US economy. The aid has been funding childcare for the past two years, which helps keep many moms working. The study polled 3,661 women and 1,144 men between November 19, 2020, and December 17, 2020. Simultaneously, if childcare centers closed, working women would bear the brunt — in a 2020 report, the National Women's Law Center found that 95% of childcare workers were women . Like many millennials, Connell faces a more expensive version of parenthood than past generations. "One of the reasons we actually have an au pair is because day care kept shutting down." She added that no day care would be able to take on their youngest until April. "It's an additional $20,000 to $30,000 for her for that extra year of childcare," Connell said. "People are always so shocked to find out what we pay for day care," she said.

A new report from the Annie E. Casey Foundation finds that childcare is weighing on parents' jobs. BLS data shows many employed people miss work because of childcare issues. Those job changes, per the report, "include quitting a job, not taking a job or greatly changing a job in the previous year." An analysis by economist Clive R. Belfield estimated that, roughly, inadequate childcare costs the US $122 billion annually, with $78 billion of that loss coming from parental income. Did you have to quit your job, reduce your work hours, or make another job change because of childcare issues?

With large language models like OpenAI's GPT-4 and Google's Bard quickly increasing their power and reach, vLex and Fastcase are betting their combined document library will be a rich training data set for legal AI products. "It will always make sense to train legal LLMs on legal data instead of the World Wide Web," Walters said. The merger creates a law library that is "the biggest legal data corpus ever assembled," the companies said. Other large law firms are using new products from companies like Casetext, a legal research company that last month released a new generative AI legal assistant product. Casey Flaherty of legal innovation collective LexFusion predicted the new vLex would be a "serious player" among legal information companies as AI progresses.
Sen. John Fetterman has been hospitalized for clinical depression since February 15. Casey is coordinating with Fetterman staff on constituent services issues and legislative priorities, according to recent reports, but doesn't call Fetterman directly so as not to disturb his ongoing recovery. Some of the others working hard to meet that internal standard include legislative assistant Madeleine Marr, a former aide to Democratic Sen. Maggie Hassan of New Hampshire. Conservative commentator Stephen L. Miller has been more blunt, accusing Fetterman's staff of unduly wielding power in his absence. "John Fetterman's chief of staff is not an elected senator," Miller wrote in an op-ed run by the Delaware Valley Journal.
A former CVS employee in Texas is suing the company after it fired her for refusing to give out birth control. The suit claims the company granted her "religious accommodation" until it reversed the policy in August 2021. The suit claims CVS previously granted Strader religious accommodation so that she was not required to give out birth control at the MinuteClinic where she worked in Keller, Texas. Currently, six states — Arizona, Arkansas, Georgia, Idaho, Mississippi, and South Dakota — allow pharmacists to refuse to dispense birth control pills or Plan B for religious reasons. Strader's suit follows similar legal action taken by CVS nurse practitioners in Virginia and Kansas, who also claim the company fired them for refusal to provide birth control to customers.
Advocates, legislators, and pregnant workers rally on Capitol Hill in support of The Pregnant Workers Fairness Act on Dec. 1 in Washington, D.C. That includes the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act, which will require employers to make temporary and reasonable accommodations for pregnant workers. "This legislation would provide common sense protections for pregnant workers, like extra bathroom breaks or a stool for workers who stand, so they can continue working while not putting extra strain on their pregnancies," Casey said. The Senate amendment to add the bill to the spending package passed on Thursday with a 73-to-24 vote. "It is a monumental and historic step forward for pregnant and post-partum workers," she said.
