They have become increasingly popular in the United States even as sales of purely electric models have started to slow. The German automaker Porsche, a division of Volkswagen AG, already sells plug-in hybrid models like the Cayenne e-Hybrid SUV and Panamera e-Hybrid four-door car, but a hybrid 911 is another matter. Initially, hybrid power will be available in only one version of the car, the high performance 911 Carrera GTS. In another major change for Porsche, this car will not be a plug-in hybrid, as other Porsche hybrid models have been. Besides hybrids, Porsche also sells fully electric cars, the Taycan and the new Macan Electric SUV.

Porsche on Tuesday revealed the first-ever production hybrid version of its iconic 911 sports car, with a starting price of $164,900. The 2025 911 Carrera GTS hybrid marks a significant change to the iconic German sports car amid the automotive industry's focus on increasing electrified vehicles and tightening fuel economy standards. "We developed and tested various ideas and approaches to decide on a hybrid system that optimally suits the 911," Frank Moser, Porsche vice president of the 911 and 718 model lines, said in a release. The new 911 Carrera GTS can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 2.9 seconds – 0.3 seconds quicker than the prior non-hybrid GTS model – and reach a top track speed of 194 mph. It is powered by a newly developed 3.6-liter boxer hybrid engine that produces 532 horsepower and 449 foot-pounds of torque.

Total auction sales of classic cars (for both online and live auctions) fell 3% last year to $4.19 billion from $4.32 billion in 2022, according to data from Classic.com. The growth in the number of cars sold helped to offset a decline in prices. The average price of a car sold on the site fell to $54,000 in 2023 from $59,500 in 2022. Bring a Trailer's sales increased about 2% last year to over $1.4 billion from $1.35 billion in 2022, according to the company's CEO Randy Nonnenberg. Bring a Trailer sold over 30,000 cars in 2023, up 19% from 2022.
