Union fights grow US workers’ slice of profit pie
  + stars: | 2023-08-18 | by ( Ben Winck | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +4 min
Strong demand for workers has given organized workers a stronger hand at the bargaining table. The United Steel Workers union has asserted itself aggressively in a bidding battle for U.S. Steel (X.N). Corporate profit is 30% above its pre-crisis high, at $2.7 trillion, according to the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis. Trucking company Yellow filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Aug. 7 after halting operations the week prior.

UPS flashes a warning sign about the US economy
  + stars: | 2023-04-25 | by ( Chris Isidore | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +3 min
America’s largest trucking company said Tuesday that revenue fell 6% in the first quarter compared to a year earlier, as its operating profit fell 22%. Its earnings fell just short of Wall Street forecasts for the period. Shares of UPS (UPS) fell more than 6% in early trading on the news. UPS had already forecast last year that its 2023 profit margin would be tighter after it reported a record profit in 2022. Besides facing a slowing economy, UPS also is engaged in contract negotiations with the Teamsters union, which represents more than 340,000 of its 444,000 US employees.
Let's just say I wanted to be more positive — but there was, alas, nothing to be positive about really. The market, I think, on Friday will be down hard off this one company's negativity because it touches every tentacle. I am sure people will sell Club holding Amazon (AMZN), for example, even as Amazon doesn't even do business with FedEx. The one thing I will stick behind though is what I said at Thursday's "Monthly Meeting" for Club members.
