CNN —Cruise ships have doubled in size over the past two decades, a precedent that could lead to even bigger vessels plying our oceans in the future and bringing potential problems, a new report has warned. The largest passenger vessels today are twice as large as they were in 2000, says a study conducted by European clean energy lobby group Transport and Environment (T&E), which warns of the environmental impact of the “rapidly” growing global cruise industry. On its launch in 1999, Royal Caribbean’s Voyager of the Seas, which has a gross tonnage (GT) of 137,276, was the biggest cruise ship in the world. Global emissionsIt notes that CO2 emissions from cruise ships in Europe were almost 20% higher in 2022 than in 2019. Cruise ships and other maritime vessels are thought to be responsible for nearly 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions each year, according to the International Maritime Organization.

Cruise lines were just beginning to reactivate their fleets after a tumultuous pause in operations amid the COVID-19 pandemic (remember that?). For the most part, if you want to pay that little but don't want to hunt for a deal, you're better off sticking with Carnival Cruise Line. Your budget vacation might not be so budget-friendly once onboardMass-market cruise lines have increasingly added pricey pay-to-play amenities to their new ships. The 22-year-old vessel is scheduled for many of the cruise line's cheapest-per-day itineraries this year. Carnival Cruise LineAnd while its mini-golf course, shows, and waterslide are free, you'll have to pay extra for the arcade games or to participate in the "Build-A-Bear Workshop at Sea" or "Deal or No Deal" programs.

Carnival Corp experienced record bookings in the second quarter of 2024. Its latest and 27th ship, Carnival Firenze, is a great budget option. But the food was mediocre, and the enticing upcharges could quickly push guests past their budget. download the app Email address Sign up By clicking “Sign Up”, you accept our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy . Unfortunately, the one craze I can't get fully behind is Carnival, specifically its new 5,245-guest Carnival Firenze ship.

I went on Firenze's four-night cruise about two weeks after its maiden voyage. Carnival Firenze had a mini-golf course scattered around the open-air deck. Norwegian's newer ships, for example, have $10 mini-golf courses and VR arcades that cost $29 for an hour of play. Similarly, Royal Caribbean's new ultra-giant, ultra-popular Icon of the Seas has a $49-per-person ropes course that can be completed in less than a minute. Carnival Firenze also has a mini-golf and ropes course — but they're both free, albeit not as exciting or modern as the cruise line's competitors.

Besides WiFi, I refused to front for Firenze's up-charged activities and services. Children had a water play area near the waterslides. Brittany Chang/Business InsiderI went on Carnival Firenze for work, which meant I had to cave on the ship's premium WiFi at $85 for all four nights. But over the last few years, cruise giants have added more irresistible pay-to-play amenities to their vessels, all while still luring travelers in with affordable base fares. On Norwegian's newer ships, for example, this means paying $10 for a round of mini-golf or $29 for an hour at the VR arcade.

How to trade Carnival before earnings using options
  + stars: | 2024-06-24 | by ( Michael Khouw | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +5 min
Both the dividend and debt levels have important implications for the stock's volatility, the price of options generally, and the relationship between the price of puts and calls. The trade All else equal, higher levels of corporate debt increase leverage and, therefore, the volatility of a company's equity. Carnival's options are nearly twice as expensive now as they were at the end of 2019, but the higher levels of debt justify higher prices. Typically, we do not recommend selling covered calls into earnings unless options prices are very high, as earnings provide a catalyst that can move a stock. In this case, an 8% implied move is substantial, but due to the high debt levels, it merely represents a fair price for the options.

Never again will I think of my parents as 'snobby' for wanting the more expensive accommodation (sorry, Mom and Dad). Carnival Firenze is Carnival Cruise Line's 27th ship. After my stint in the ship's interior accommodation, I now understand why balconies are the most popular cabin category. For Firenze's cheapest itinerary in 2024 — a four-night roundtrip voyage from Long Beach, California, to Catalina Island and Ensenada, Mexico — a dual-occupancy interior cabin starts at $359 per person. That's a $160 difference — and well worth the extra cash.

"Cruise demand is also tied to a broader consumer desire for accumulating experiences rather than objects," Farley wrote. "We can see that 2024 is not just benefiting from pent up demand, because that is completely new demand," Farley said. Melius Research is also bullish on the industry's future and believes cruise lines are set for continued margin expansion over the next several years. However, cruise pricing is holding up, analyst Jamie Rollo said in a note Friday. Earlier this month, the cruise operator lifted its full-year earnings forecast, citing strong demand and an improved outlook for the year.

I booked the cheapest interior cabin for my four-night cruise on Carnival's new Carnival Firenze. It was ugly, dated, and lacked decor, but shockingly spacious. Interior staterooms in Carnival's newest ship start at $90 per person per day in 2024. download the app Email address Sign up By clicking “Sign Up”, you accept our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy . One of its cruises, the Carnival Legend, departed on Sunday for a seven-day round trip from the Baltimore port and will return instead to Norfolk. Competitors Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line were up around 3% and 6% respectively at closing. American Cruise Line also frequents the Baltimore port on East Coast itineraries — its American Glory cruise is set to sail next week. The company has over 30 cruises scheduled from the Baltimore port for the rest of 2024. The Baltimore port is the 17th-largest in the US, and the bridge collapse has left six construction workers presumed dead.

Love them or loathe them, giant cruise ships are among the most remarkable success stories of the mass tourism age. Rechristened the Mardi Gras, the first Carnival cruise ship sailed out of Miami that March. Cruise ships like the Icon of the Seas will spend the majority of their trip at sea. Eight years later, cruise ships such as the Diamond Princess became early incubators for COVID-19. Cruise Market Watch forecasts there will be 360 cruise ships in service at the end of this year, comprising less than 1% of the global commercial fleet.

Cruise ship companies are failing sexual assault victims, lawsuits seen by Business Insider show. Carnival told the Washington Post last year that the alleged assailant was fired from the cruise line but that he was never charged. "The truth is, cruise companies don't know much about the employees they hire," he told BI. "I don't know how they sleep at night, I really don't"Jamie Barnett, from the organization International Cruise Victims (ICV), told BI that the behavior of cruise companies makes victims feel "lost and very isolated." Cruise companies, she said, "will fight tooth and nail before they would roll over and not do what they needed to do, to keep the public from knowing."

Carnival's CEO said a fuel surcharge is "certainly not off the table" during an earnings call. To help offset soaring oil prices, cruise lines and airlines can charge passengers fees known as fuel surcharges. AdvertisementAdvertisementCarnival said it expected a net impact of $130 million in the fourth quarter due to rising fuel costs and unfavorable currency exchange rates. He said a fuel surcharge wouldn't be implemented in the near term, and it would only impact future bookings, rather than applied retroactively. "We continue to work aggressively to manage fuel costs the best way possible by consuming less," he said on the Friday earnings call.

The Carnival cruise ship Sunrise is seen docked at Miami Port, in Miami, Florida, U.S., June 18, 2022. Unlike other major cruise operators, Carnival does not hedge against volatility in oil prices. The company was "not thinking" about fuel hedging at this point, CFO David Bernstein told Reuters in an interview. Instead, to reduce the fuel burn, Carnival was looking at fuel optimization technologies and enhancing itineraries, Bernstein added.
