“We want to make this environment comfortable, but also know, you know, what the standard is – you’re here for a reason,” said Lindsey Horan, the midfielder who serves as the team’s captain. And we want to get back to being the best in the world.”“So, we need those players. It was arguably Hayes’ first tough decision as the manager of the women’s team after coming on board in late 2023 following a successful decade-plus at Chelsea FC in London. Even still, she is finding it easier than anticipated to get her team to come together. I cannot finish the ball for players, but I can certainly coach to put players in positions.”

CNN —US Women’s National Team (USWNT) star Megan Rapinoe, a two-time Women’s World Cup winner, will play one more international match before she retires from the game. With 63 career goals and 73 assists for the US women’s side, Rapinoe – an Olympic gold medalist from London 2012 – ranks in the top 10 for both categories in US women’s history. Following her final World Cup appearance this year in Australia and New Zealand, Rapinoe has returned to her National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) team, the OL Reign, for the remainder of the season. Megan Rapinoe lifts the trophy as the US celebrates victory in the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup. In her domestic career, she won the French league title and French Cup with Lyon in the 2012/13 season and has won three NWSL Shields with the Seattle Reign and OL Reign.

At a Coney Island park this summer, children in a basketball summer camp wore blue-and-white uniforms bearing the logo of “The Coney,” a proposed casino project in the neighborhood and the camp’s sponsor. A few months earlier on Long Island, where Las Vegas Sands is pitching a casino, children from local soccer teams were invited to a Sands-sponsored training session featuring the superstars David Beckham and Carli Lloyd. In the escalating race to be one of the first to open a casino in the New York City area, developers are rushing to win local support after state regulators said projects needed to be “embraced by the community.” A casino logo emblazoned across youth sports jerseys is just one example of the lengths to which gambling operators have gone to woo those communities and secure a coveted license. But their sponsorship of these recent children’s events has proved to be as divisive as the prospect of the casinos themselves.

Spain won its first Women's World Cup title less than a year after a player rebellion, holding off England 1-0 on Sunday after Olga Carmona's first-half goal. Spain is the fifth winner in nine editions of the Women's World Cup and joins Germany as the only two nations to win both the men's and women's tournaments. The Lionesses were trying to bring a World Cup back to England for the first time since 1966, but fell just short. Three of those players — Ona Batlle, Aitana Bonmatí and Mariona Caldentey — reconciled with the federation and were at the World Cup. England coach Sarina Wiegman was the first coach to take her teams to back-to-back World Cup title matches.

For the first time since 2011, a new champion in women’s soccer has been crowned. Amy Bass Rodney BedsoleSpain came out swinging with vigor and poise in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup final in Sydney’s Stadium Australia, spreading the field, finding gaps in England’s backline and posting early dominant possession percentages. New worldAs the seconds of extra time ticked in the final, we already knew one result: no matter who won Sunday, the exclusive club of Women’s World Cup champions was about to have a newcomer. Jamaica made history at this World Cup because of the Reggae Girlz’ prowess, supported by a viral fundraising effort, not by its own federation. Indeed, it is his job to further the game, including and perhaps especially the women’s game, and not sit and wait to be convinced by women or anyone else.

The US Women’s National Team (USWNT) was on the cusp of winning its second Women’s World Cup – this time in front of a sell-out home crowd. The 1999 Women’s World Cup was a turning point for the women’s game, particularly in the US, and pictures of Chastain’s celebrations are synonymous with the surge of success for soccer in the States. The final of the tournament also still holds the record for the biggest attendance for a Women’s World Cup game. “[The 1999 tournament] is why I’m here, it’s why I’m in the US and playing for the US,” 2015 Women’s World Cup winner Sydney Leroux said according to FIFA. Their elation quickly turned to stunned silence when a review of the shot determined the ball had crossed the goal line, sending the US women’s team crashing out of the World Cup. Fans of US women’s football are not used the seeing their team lose. The squad came into this tournament aiming for a historic and never before achieved “three-peat” – three consecutive World Cup wins. But he added: “Not everyone remembers that, before she was the hero of the 2015 World Cup, Carli Lloyd missed a [penalty kick] in the 2011 [World Cup] final. “And we hope to cheer in person at the next Women’s World Cup, wherever it may be.”

The U.S. suffered their earliest elimination at the World Cup by far, having never failed to reach the semi-finals in all eight previous tournaments. We run it," twice World Cup winner Brandi Chastain said in a pre-World Cup promotion for the NWSL. Injuries undoubtedly made their World Cup mission tougher, with captain Becky Sauerbrunn and forward Mallory Swanson ruled out of the squad. Yet, the U.S. never looked like World Cup winners when the tournament kicked off. The World Cup exit leaves U.S. women's soccer at a cross-roads, and pondering a way out of the mire.

This was a changing of the guard in women’s soccer. For decades, ever since that first World Cup win in 1991, the US has been the standard-bearer in women’s soccer, the dominant force on the pitch, its leading voice off it. Three of the four former World Cup winners are no longer in the tournament, while the so-called underdogs have thrived. As the US team itself posted on social media after the match, “This year’s Women’s World Cup is a testament to the growth of women’s soccer on a global scale …”The penalty shootout went to sudden death. But there is light to add to these dark days for US women’s soccer because this is a team which promises to have a better future.

Former USWNT player Carli Lloyd was highly critical of the US team's performance against Portugal. And it’s the World Cup, you know, it’s the biggest stage,” added Horan as she looked ahead to the team’s last-16 knockout match against Sweden on Sunday. Phil Walter/Getty ImagesAfter Tuesday’s game, US coach Vlatko Andonovski said it was “insane” for anyone to question the team’s commitment. This will be the seventh World Cup meeting between the two teams and the first in the knockout stages, according to FIFA. Sweden also drew with the US in 2015 and beat them in 2011 – the last time any team defeated the US Women’s National Team inside regulation at a World Cup.

Instead they packed their bags after the scoreless draw as the United States stayed behind, left to wonder how their journey for an unprecedented third consecutive title had nearly turned into utter disaster. Had they exited, it would have been the worst World Cup performance for the top-ranked team and would have marked the first time that defending champions had gone out in the group stage. Doing so will require that the United States resolve their lack of synchrony, with Andonovski previously blaming the starters' lack of playing minutes together. "We have to get on the same page when it comes down to the final goal, to the final pass and execution." "I wouldn’t say that the midfield three was disjointed - obviously we wanted to see them more connected," said Andonovski.

CNN —US coach Vlatko Andonovski said it was “insane” for anyone to question the team’s commitment as he responded to criticism from former American international soccer star Carli Lloyd. “Everyone is entitled to opinion and, you know, they can say whatever they want, but I just know how this team feels,” he added. “We know that it’s not good enough … We’re not happy with our performance, but we qualify for the next round. “The performances aren’t where we want them,” experienced forward Megan Rapinoe, who came on as a second-half substitute against Portugal, told reporters. It’s clear, as the players themselves know, that things haven’t clicked for Andonovski’s team yet.

CNN —After the thrill of winning successive Women’s World Cup titles, the 2023 tournament – so far – has brought the US team very much down to earth with a bump. For a team that has been so historically dominant at the Women’s World Cup, performances throughout the 2023 edition so far have been underwhelming for women’s soccer’s most dynastic team. Fans of the US team get ready for the Women's World Cup group game against Portugal. 3 ranked in the world by FIFA, has plenty of World Cup history. PinnedThe World Cup is always about expectations, but reputations count for a lot, too. The United States women’s team, which plays Vietnam at 9 p.m. in its first match of the tournament in Auckland, New Zealand, knows this, of course. Its chase for a third consecutive World Cup championship — and fifth overall — opens today with a game against Vietnam. The United States team that arrived at this World Cup is not the same one that rolled into France four years ago and beat all comers. Rose Lavelle, who had two that day in Reims, is finally fit again after months away from the team, Andonovski said.

CNN —Soccer players at the 2023 Women’s World Cup will on average earn just 25 cents for every dollar earned by men at their World Cup last year, a new CNN analysis found. In addition to prize money, FIFA committed to paying $42 million to the federations and players’ clubs for Women’s World Cup preparations. Havana Solaun (R) and Jamaica are appearing at their second ever Women's World Cup. But for the players, equal pay encompasses more than simply closing this gap to the salaries enjoyed by male footballers. June 2023 A record $110 million prize pot negotiated for the Women’s World Cup, at least $30,000 guaranteed for every player.

Building chemistry on a World Cup squad is no easy feat, as players who once regarded one another as club foes must bond as team mates in a span of a few weeks, forming a cohesive unit. Veteran forward Megan Rapinoe turns 38 next month and finds herself on the same squad as 18-year-old Alyssa Thompson. Thompson and 21-year-old forward Trinity Rodman count retired great Carli Lloyd's goal from half-field the 2015 World Cup final as a pivotal memory from their childhood.
