The National Hurricane Center calls it Potential Tropical Cyclone 8 and said in forecast updates that the front will weaken as it travels over terrain overnight. Similar volunteer weather stations at other coastal locations, including at Military Ocean Terminal Sunny Point in Southport, reported more than 14 inches of rain, the weather service said. A National Weather Service forecaster said that it was too soon to say whether the amounts were record breakers but that the weather service office in Wilmington is likely to have that answer late Tuesday morning. A flash flood event was confirmed in the community of Kelly, about 38 miles inland from Wilmington, the weather service said. The disturbance was 45 miles west of Cape Fear and traveling north-northwest at 7 mph, the National Hurricane Center said in its latest advisory.

Initial filings for unemployment benefits dipped last week, indicating that the U.S. labor market remains tight and a potential factor in persistent inflation. Weekly jobless claims totaled a seasonally adjusted 198,000 for the period ended Oct. 14, the Labor Department reported Thursday. The labor market has been a critical factor in the Federal Reserve's deliberations over monetary policy. The labor market thus far has shown few effects of the United Auto Workers strike as well as other labor unrest. The U.S. labor market held strong as September came to a close, with weekly jobless claims holding around recent lows, the Labor Department reported Thursday. Continuing claims, which run a week behind, were little changed at 1.664 million, below the 1.68 million estimate from FactSet. Following the report, stock market futures added to losses while Treasury yields moved higher. Central bank officials worry that continued tightness in the labor market could exert upward pressure on inflation and necessitate additional interest rate hikes. Markets have been especially sensitive to moves higher in Treasury yields that could indicate the Fed will keep rates higher.

(AP) — Tropical Storm Ophelia was expected to make landfall on the North Carolina coast early Saturday morning with the potential for damaging winds and dangerous surges of water, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said. Ophelia was about 70 miles (115 kilometers) south of Cape Lookout, North Carolina, and heading north-northwest at 12 mph (19 kph) late Friday after spinning into tropical storm during the afternoon. A tropical storm warning was issued from Cape Fear, North Carolina, to Fenwick Island, Delaware. The governors of North Carolina, Virginia and Maryland declared a state of emergency Friday as some schools closed early and several weekend events were canceled. The North Carolina Ferry System on Friday suspended service on all routes until conditions improve, officials said.

CNN —The US Coast Guard is searching for four divers who went missing south of Cape Fear, North Carolina, on Sunday, authorities said. The four men went diving from a recreational boat about 63 miles east of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, around noon and did not resurface, a release from the US Coast Guard said. Crews will continue searching through the night, the release added. The was search was taking place about 50 miles south of Cape Fear, according to the Coast Guard. Cape Fear is near the southeastern part of North Carolina and is about 70 miles north of Myrtle Beach.

CNN —Wall Street bankers, investors and economists have for months waffled over whether a US recession is coming. But for some Americans, the unforgiving economic pain typical during recession has already set in. Consumer spending accounts for about two-thirds of economic output, so if more Americans are forced to cut back because they were laid off, that might throw the US economy into a recession. Bank of America Chief Executive Brian Moynihan told CNN last week that he expects a mild recession early next year, rather than the late 2022 recession many have predicted. That means that laid-off Americans were often able to find a new job quickly due to a hot job market.
