China's hot electric vehicle market has been gaining investor interest, and one analyst sees potential for the sector to grow further. "China's EV market is the largest in the world and also delivers fast growth," Vincent Sun, senior equity analyst at Morningstar said. This translates to a penetration rate of 49% of China's auto market in September. Sales of these vehicles in China's domestic market were up 66% year-on-year to 72,000 in September . In a boost for Toyota, Indian state cuts levies on hybrid cars

A move by India's Uttar Pradesh state to waive some levies on hybrid cars will make them 10% cheaper, delivering Japan's Toyota Motor a big win in lobbying efforts and raising industry and analyst expectations that other states could follow suit. Just as it does with electric cars, the government of India's most populous state will also waive the registration tax on some hybrid car sales, it said in a July 5 notification. Hybrid cars offer fuel savings as they operate on both electric motors and combustion engines. "This is a sizeable incentive provided by a state for hybrid cars. Uttar Pradesh accounts for 10% of India's total car sales.

CNN —The Chevrolet Malibu, the last sedan still sold by General Motors’ biggest selling brand, will end production this year, the company announced. Malibu production will end in November as the factory that builds it, the Fairfax Assembly Plant in Kansas City, Kansas, is reconfigured to build a new generation of the Chevrolet Bolt EV. Chevrolet stopped making its Mustang competitor, the Camaro, last year. The Malibu was introduced back in the 1960s as a more luxurious version of the Chevrolet Chevelle, called the Chevelle Malibu. The Malibu model line ended production in 1983 but was brought back again in 1997, and has been in production since then.

General Motors said on Wednesday that it would stop making the Chevrolet Malibu, the last affordable sedan in its U.S. model lineup and a venerable nameplate that was introduced in the 1960s when the company was a dominant force in the U.S. economy. For years, American drivers have been gravitating toward sport utility vehicles and away from sedans, compacts and hatchbacks. G.M.’s two Detroit rivals, Stellantis and Ford Motor, have also largely wiped their slates clean of cars in the United States. Last month, Subaru, a Japanese automaker, said it would stop making its Legacy sedan next year. produces the Malibu at a plant in Fairfax, Kan., and will continue to manufacture the car until later this year, when it plans to retool the factory to make a new version of the Chevrolet Bolt, an electric car, and the Cadillac XT4, a luxury S.U.V.

What if no one wants a cheap Tesla?

Even at a lower price, say $25,000, it's a very significant purchase — likely one of the most expensive purchases a person will make. AdvertisementSo let's for a second look at why a lower ticket price might not be a panacea for Tesla. There are many other Tesla buyers, of course, but as Tesla introduces lower-cost models in search of different buyers, needs will shift. Musk and Tesla are politicizedAs Tesla looks to lure potential new buyers with a cheaper car, it will have to contend with souring consumer sentiment toward the EV maker. Maybe the pool of buyers for a cheap Tesla will be ginormous.

Sales growth for hybrid cars is outpacing growth for electric vehicles this year. Some Tesla Cybertruck owners noticed their new stainless steel vehicles have small rust specks. A few months after deliveries began, some members of a Cybertruck-owners forum started complaining about rust spots on the vehicle. After all, the Cybertruck is the first stainless steel vehicle to be produced since DMC made the stainless steel DeLorean and later halted production in 1982. The extra upkeep isn't entirely unexpected for experienced Tesla owners, many of whom have taken on the role of early adopters. If Tesla hits Musk's ambitious production targets for the Cybertruck, Tesla is likely to face less forgiving buyers, automotive analyst Ivan Drury told BI.

TOKYO (AP) — Japanese transport officials raided a Toyota-affiliated plant Tuesday after the company admitted to cheating on engine testing, as Toyota Motor Corp. reported it sold over 11 million vehicles in 2023 to retain its status as the world’s top car manufacturer. In April, a whistleblower exposed that Daihatsu Motor Corp., which makes small cars and is 100% owned by Toyota, had been cheating on its testing for decades. In 2022, Hino Motors, a truck maker that’s also part of the Toyota group, said it had systematically falsified emissions data dating back as far as 2003. But production has been halted on some of the models, including the 10 models affected by the latest cheating. Sato has acknowledged Toyota group companies need better communication and education about the importance of complying with rules.

The police in Joliet, Ill., were searching on Monday for a suspect in the fatal shooting of eight people, seven of whom were found dead in two homes on the same block on the city’s east side, the authorities said. The suspect, Romeo Nance, 23, was believed to be driving a red Toyota Camry, and “should be regarded as armed and dangerous,” the Joliet Police Department said in a statement posted to Facebook. The authorities said that they had discovered seven of the bodies — two in one home, and five in another — on Monday, and that they believed that a fatal shooting on Sunday afternoon about four miles southeast was connected. The police were notified of the seven bodies by the Will County Sheriff’s Office just after 12 p.m. Monday, Chief William Evans of the Joliet Police Department said at a news conference on Monday evening. The motive for the killings was unclear, but the police believe that Mr. Nance knew the victims, who appeared to have been related to one another, Chief Evans said.

There's rising hope that monetary policymakers have successfully cooled inflation without tipping the economy into a recession. Yet closely watched survey data from the University of Michigan shows consumer sentiment, while improving, is a far cry from pre-pandemic levels. Inflation vs. the job marketContinued strength in the labor market is something economists expected to sweeten everyday Americans' views of the economy. While the Michigan index compiles questions focused on financial conditions and purchasing power, the Conference Board's more closely gauges one's feelings about the job market. UAW aims to organize 13 nonunion automakers

New York CNN —The United Auto Workers union says it has started an effort to organize workers at 13 non-union automakers with US factories. The union said there are about 150,000 employees at 36 nonunion auto plants operated by the companies it is targeting in this campaign. That is slightly more than the union’s representation at the three unionized automakers, which have about 145,000 UAW members between them. But if a union organizing campaign is successful, the union will be made up of workers from the company. The union has filed complaints accusing many of the automakers of unfair labor practices during those earlier organizing efforts.

TOKYO (AP) — Toyota is selling a part of its stake in components maker Denso to raise cash for its drive toward electric vehicles and other innovations, Japan's top automaker said Wednesday. The move is estimated to raise about 290 billion yen ($2 billion), given recent share prices. Toyota affiliates, Toyota Industries and Aisin, are also selling a portion of their Denso shares, officials said. Toyota officials have acknowledged they have fallen behind in the industry shift toward electric vehicles, and they have been aggressively playing catch-up. Toyota officials hinted other such offers may be in the works but declined to give specifics.

The United Auto Workers union is launching an unprecedented campaign to organize 13 non-union automakers in the U.S. after securing record contracts with the Detroit automakers. As part of the campaign workers are signing electronic cards in support of union efforts to potentially organize U.S. plants from those automakers. It is not guaranteed that the union would push to organize every plant or automaker that participates in the campaign. UAW President Shawn Fain has said the union's next mission after ratifying record contracts with General Motors, Ford Motor and Stellantis was to expand its ranks. Still, the UAW has a poor track record with trying to organize non-Detroit automakers.

Hybrid vehicle market share has picked up pace in 2023 despite all the investment pouring into EVs. From October 2022 to October of this year, total vehicle market share for hybrids grew from 6.5% to 11.4%, according to data from Edmunds. Over the same time period, EV market share growth was more sluggish, expanding from 6% to 7.5%. Toyota 's 2024 Prius, often called the "gold standard" in hybrid vehicles, was named MotorTrend's car of the year. The uptick in hybrid sales won't likely spell doom and gloom for the EV market over the long-term.
