Once a practical way to transcribe, calligraphy has evolved into a fine art. As the practice we recognize today spread across East Asia, countries like China, Japan, and Korea developed their own methods of creating high-quality calligraphy tools. Top-of-the-line brushes can cost $1,000, and quality ink sticks can reach multiple thousands of dollars. And while dedicated master craftsmen worry about the future of traditional calligraphy tools, younger calligraphers swear by the quality of these handmade items. So why are calligraphers willing to spend so much just to write?

Calligraphy inkstones, especially elaborately designed ones, can cost over $5,000. While the traditional practice of using an ink stick and inkstone is less common now that liquid ink exists, the artistry and labor involved in making inkstones — for use or as collectibles — keep demand alive. The Ancient Art of Calligraphy Is Having a Revival

“Go more slowly,” Laura Edralin, a calligraphy teacher in London, told me, as she walked around a table of beginners on a recent Wednesday night, explaining how to achieve even, flowing strokes. As a breaking news reporter for The New York Times, I am not used to being told to slow down, nor am I accustomed to writing by hand. Calligraphy, a centuries-old art form, is seeing a surge of interest, including among young people more familiar with coding than cursive. An increase in calligraphy-related posts on social media and the popularity of online classes may have helped drive the trend. On TikTok, where users can find how-to videos or watch clips of experienced calligraphers at work, 63 percent more posts used #calligraphy in April 2024 than in April 2023, according to TikTok.

Leave Jemaa el Fna — the huge, chaotic, carnivalesque marketplace seen on every postcard — to the cobra charmers, hustlers and package-tour throngs. In the early 20th century, Thami el Glaoui, the onetime ruler of Marrakesh — known as the bacha in local Arabic — was a legend. The Islamic decorative arts find dazzling expression inside the Medersa Ben Youssef, a centuries-old religious school adorned with some of the finest craftsmanship in Morocco. Follow the buttery scent of leather to a passage called Derb el Hammam in Souk Smata, the leatherworking area of the medina. Sunlight filters through the overhead slats of the stalls, illuminating belts, bags, jackets, ottomans and slippers known as babouches — a favorite Morocco souvenir (prepare to haggle).

By Fayaz Aziz and Mushtaq AliPESHAWAR, Pakistan (Reuters) - Colourful trucks with paintings of political leaders that once dotted Pakistan's roads and highways ahead of elections are missing this poll season, replaced mostly by the printing on posters and banners. Kaleidoscopic murals of flowers, Islamic motifs, calligraphy, snow-capped Himalayan peaks, local mosques and popular figures are renowned examples of Pakistani truck art. Before printing posters became widespread, truck paintings of leaders, particularly in the run-up to elections, were a much sought after campaign medium. The city in Pakistan's northwest is one of the country's major hubs for the art form. Ahmad said painters are now limited to regular truck art, with business also being hurt by rising prices.

The phenomenon, known as a starling murmuration in English or “black sun” in Danish, lasts just minutes, or even seconds. But it left a lasting impression on Danish photographer Søren Solkær, who first witnessed the spectacle when he was 10 years old. “The first thing that came to mind was starling murmurations … this big piece of calligraphy in the sky,” he told CNN. Solkær’s latest photobook, “Starling,” published last month, charts this migration journey, and with it, he hopes to inspire a closer relationship with nature. However, as a product of the American public school system and a teacher in China, I notice a number of distinct differences characterizing education. China represents the world's largest population of English language learners, and this multilingual environment impacts the school and the students. One can often hear students speaking English together in the halls due to either school policy or an interest in the language. China boasts a nearly flawless high school graduation rate, and students often begin their education in an early years program. As a teacher in China, I'm more respected than in the USTeaching is an esteemed and sought-after profession, and teachers in China will often find more respect from students and parents than those in the US.

Office workers are not the only ones grumbling about the unattractiveness of Qianhai, a special economic zone where Chinese dreams of global financial might and economic prosperity that once seemed inevitable are now darkened by half-empty skyscrapers and shopping malls as well as barely used motorways. And that's before China's tallest skyscraper of over 1,000 metres and a cluster of other towers are completed. With China entering a new era of sluggish growth, Qianhai may never reach the international status to which it aspires. What Chinese Calligraphy Taught Me About Myself

In calligraphy, the idea is to replicate the old masters’ techniques, thereby refining your own. I was trying to make sense of this tangle by writing lines, but at its heart, calligraphy is a sensuous practice. As a bodily practice, calligraphy could transcend its own cultural constraints. I had been learning calligraphy to try to get in touch with my cultural roots, but what I was really seeking was a return to myself. In my visceral responses, I observe how calligraphy reveals our intuition for beauty.
