Rancho Palos Verdes, a coastal community in the Los Angeles area, could be described as a geological ticking time bomb. The affluent city sits atop steep cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean that, for hundreds of years, have been slowly shifting and giving way. Whereas the ground slid downward 8 inches annually in years past, it has lurched 13 inches per week in some places between July and August. The Palos Verdes Peninsula is composed of weak rocks and beds of clay that prevent water from draining properly belowground. So during periods of heavy rain or high tectonic activity, the bluffs can slip, turning constant, slow-moving landslides into catastrophes.

Einride plans to open many EV charging stations for freight trucking on the West and East coasts, though California is the only state in which there are any EV freight charging stations of scale today. Voltera, which develops, owns and operates EV infrastructure, said the site was permitted, built, electrified and operational in under 18 months. "In the world of charging infrastructure, that's pretty remarkable," its CEO Matt Horton said in a statement. One of the first EV charging stations of scale for freight trucks is opening near the major ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, California, as the trucking market takes some limited, but significant steps to build the infrastructure required for a long-term transition to EV trucking and net-zero shipping. Additional EV charging projects at ports in New York and New Jersey, as well as the Pacific Northwest, are planned.

Most of the nation's power lines are above ground because its cheaper to do it that way. But more utilities have been burying power lines in response to bigger and more destructive natural disasters. That fire was started by lightening, not PG&E's power lines, but it is a reminder of the lasting damage that wildfires can cause. The Public Utilities Commission is considering two other plans that would include both burying power lines and using protective coverings. While burying power lines is the most effective way to prevent wildfires, it is not a quick fix.

Trucks drive through the Port of Oakland, Calif., March 31. Photo: Justin Sullivan/Getty ImagesYour editorial “California’s Assault on Trucks” (Sept. 1) refers to a remark of mine that some trucking fleets use diesel generators to power chargers, so that their electric trucks don’t go unused. This comment needs clarification. Diesel generators are being used only sporadically as a temporary bridge until the infrastructure is built to deliver clean energy to electric trucks. It went unmentioned that Southern California Edison is working to eliminate this temporary and undesirable occurrence.

CNN —Hurricane Hilary is expected to slam into Southern California on Sunday as a rare tropical storm, unleashing floods, fierce winds and heavy downpours as residents evacuate, parks and beaches close and first responders brace for water rescues. Although Hilary is forecast to move north from Baja California into Southern California Sunday afternoon, its impacts will be felt earlier. First responders have also pre-positioned to respond quickly and perform water rescues from flooded areas, state officials said. There are “more than 7,500 boots on the ground” already deployed to help protect from the impact of Hurricane Hilary, according to the release from Newsom’s office. “There will be power outages across Southern California,” Ward said.

CNN —Residents in the Southwest are bracing for heavy rains and potentially catastrophic flooding as Hurricane Hilary is expected to pummel the region as a rare tropical storm beginning Sunday and lasting into next week. Its core is expected to pass close to the peninsula Saturday night and then weaken into a tropical storm as it crosses into the US and Southern California. The threat has triggered California’s first ever tropical storm warning extending from the state’s southern border to just north of Los Angeles. “Preparations for the impacts of flooding from rainfall should be completed as soon as possible, as heavy rain will increase ahead of the center on Saturday,” the hurricane center said. With electric vehicle adoption accelerating, so too is the need servicing public charging stations. Unlike fixing an old gas pump, some companies are using technology to both service and learn from the stations, to improve EV charging technology. More than one-quarter of public EV charging stations were found to be nonfunctioning, according to a survey done in California by researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, and Cool the Earth, an area nonprofit. barely three years ago and says the company is now servicing EV charging stations across 17 states. That data set can be helpful to network providers, EV and charging station manufacturers, plus governments, according to Terry.

UBS is initiating coverage of a key renewable energy company with a buy rating thanks to projects it's involved in that will benefit from the Biden administration's environmental efforts. The firm has a price target of $60 on Ameresco , which represents 47% upside against the stock's Monday closing price of $40.78. Ameresco is a diversified player in the renewable space with projects that range from solar power to landfill gas capture to battery storage. AMRC YTD mountain Shares of energy company Ameresco have declined roughly 18% from the start of 2023. "While this presents a near-term risk for AMRC, we ultimately expect the IRA to drive increased demand and lower project costs."
Meanwhile, BlackRock is part of another group investing $650 million to build chargers along freight routes. Because port real estate is at a premium, most early drayage charging projects will be "behind the fence" on trucking company property, experts said. Electric trucks cannot operate without chargers, but it does not make sense to build chargers if drivers are not using electric trucks. Prologis, the biggest U.S. warehouse owner, created its mobility business to install electric truck chargers and solar panels. "A marriage between real estate and energy infrastructure" will be needed to accelerate the transition to electric-powered trucking, Prologis Mobility's Holland said.
Financial stress stemming from Silicon Valley Bank's collapse could spread, a top fund manager said. But that in itself is becoming an under-the-radar issue, he noted, as large banks' strength is now coming at the expense of regional banks — even those without issues. Since most regional banks aren't classified as "systemically important," their clients would be out of luck in the event of a bank failure, Hatfield noted. Unless the FDIC insures all deposits at all banks, Hatfield said that there will be no reason to put money in a non-protected regional bank. So they'll have a negative interest margin, they'll lose money, they'll get downgraded, and they'll go out of business."
[1/3] Solar installers from Baker Electric place solar panels on the roof of a residential home in Scripps Ranch, San Diego, California, U.S. October 14, 2016. For decades, Californians with rooftop panels have been credited for excess power at or near the full retail electricity rate. Solar companies counter that the changes would slow new installations and threaten California's clean energy and climate change goals. California's three investor-owned utilities are Pacific Gas & Electric (PCG.N), Southern California Edison (EIX.N) and San Diego Gas & Electric (SRE.N). Customers installing solar with a battery, for example, would save about $136 a month under the plan, compared with $100 a month with just solar.
The data disclosure deliberately targeted Asian Americans, with resulting disproportionate penalties against those of Asian descent, the suit says. “It’s unacceptable that two public agencies would carelessly flout state law and utility customers’ privacy rights, and even more unacceptable that they targeted a specific community in doing so,” she said in a statement. Private utilities like Pacific Gas & Electric, Southern California Edison and San Diego Gas & Electric are barred from disclosing customer utility data to law enforcement without a court order under state law and California Public Utility Commission rules, he said. Public utilities like SMUD aren’t regulated by the commission, but state law bars them “from disclosing entire neighborhoods’ worth of data to law enforcement absent a court order or ongoing investigation,” Mackey said. Southern California Edison’s policy generally requires a warrant or subpoena to share information with law enforcement.
The emissions were equal to the annual greenhouse gas emissions of more than 59,000 automobiles, according to the EPA’s greenhouse gas equivalency calculator. Under such a scenario Duke Energy would likely have years of low emissions punctuated by a single year of high emissions. While other utilities have participated for decades in a voluntary program with the EPA to reduce SF6 emissions to next to nothing, Duke Energy has not. Brooks said Duke Energy is also targeting its most leaky equipment for faster replacement. The figure is roughly half of 1% of all greenhouse gas emissions worldwide, far smaller than yearly emissions of carbon dioxide, the primary driver of climate change.
