Ron DeSantis’ exclusive interview with NBC News’ Dasha Burns covered a wide range of topics, including two issues dogging DeSantis on the campaign trail: abortion and his state’s new Black history standards. And although he’s pledged to be a “pro-life president,” he’s broken with some others in the GOP field and has not embraced a federal ban on abortions. “I think the reality is that that basically means the states are going to have primary control over it,” DeSantis said. Asked if he would veto a national abortion ban, DeSantis said, “We will be a pro-life president, and we will support pro-life policies. DeSantis defended the standards, saying “it’s very clear that they’re showing that this was a grave injustice, and it contradicted the founding principles of our country.”“Those standards were not political at all.

Republican presidential hopefuls have just two weeks left to qualify for the first presidential primary debate, which is set for Aug. 23. Candidates must hit the minimum threshold of 40,000 unique donors and the polling thresholds 48 hours prior to that debate, and also commit to supporting the eventual GOP nominee. The messaging seemed to suggest that Hunter Biden's art patrons came from a rarified universe of collectors who had nothing to do with the hurly burly of politics. Hunter Biden did in fact learn the identity of two buyers, according to three people directly familiar with Hunter Biden's own account of his art career. In the past, Hunter Biden has privately suggested that he could arrange to have friends seated on the commission. In fact, according to the person familiar with Hunter Biden's account, Morris purchased the art through Biden's gallery.

Washington CNN —The Senate Judiciary Committee advanced legislation on Thursday that would give news organizations the power to jointly bargain against Meta, Google and other online platforms for a greater share of online advertising revenue. One member of the committee, California Democratic Sen. Alex Padilla, voted against the bill Thursday and vowed to block any future floor vote on the legislation until lawmakers make several changes. Padilla said the legislation doesn’t do enough to ensure that actual journalists in local newsrooms will benefit from the bargaining, as opposed to hedge funds and publication owners. “This bill is not about whether or not you like social media,” Kennedy said. “This bill is not about whether or not you like what is happening in American news media today.

Much of the existing legislation addressing TikTok at the federal and state level has focused on bans of the app. Wednesday’s legislation, known as the Protecting Americans’ Data From Foreign Surveillance Act, does not identify TikTok by name. TikTok has faced criticism from US officials who say the company’s links to China pose a national security risk. Congress has made several attempts in recent months to address data transfers to foreign adversaries. In February, House lawmakers advanced a bill that would all but require the Biden administration to ban TikTok over national security concerns about the app.

WASHINGTON — Plans announced Sunday to fully reimburse deposits made in the collapsed Silicon Valley Bank and the shuttered Signature Bank will rely on Wall Street and large financial institutions — not taxpayers — to foot the bill, Treasury officials said. The DIF currently has over $100 billion in it, a sum the Treasury official said was "more than fully sufficient" to cover SVB and Signature depositors. To that end, federal officials strongly pushed back on the idea that the plans for SVB and Signature constituted a "bailout." Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., insisted that "If there is a bailout of Silicon Valley Bank, it must be 100 percent financed by Wall Street and large financial institutions." On Sunday afternoon, Treasury approved of plans that would unwind both SVB and Signature Bank, based in New York, "in a manner that fully protects all depositors."
