California was getting ready to fight President-elect Donald Trump. Gavin Newsom called shortly after the November election to position California to counter Trump has been overshadowed by the wildfires, the speed of which seemed to catch many officials off guard. Newsom and other California Democrats have long held the state up as a national leader in addressing environmental issues, social inequality and economic innovation. But the wildfire crisis has exposed vulnerabilities in the state’s infrastructure and governance that critics argue undermine this narrative. Newsom and the political leaders in Hollywood’s hometown were likely to become a political target regardless of what they actually do.

Last year was the planet’s hottest in recorded history, NASA announced Friday, marking two years in a row that global temperatures have shattered records. The agency’s analysis found that 2024 was hotter than any year since at least 1880. The back-to-back milestones are part of a continued warming trajectory that climate scientists have long warned about and that was predicted in numerous climate models. “Once again, the temperature record has been shattered — 2024 was the hottest year since record keeping began in 1880,” NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said in a statement. Countries agreed in the landmark 2015 Paris Agreement to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees C (2.7 degrees F) above preindustrial times to avert the most catastrophic consequences of climate change.

The milestone was confirmed by the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S), which said climate change is pushing the planet’s temperature to levels never before experienced by modern humans. Britain’s Met Office confirmed 2024’s likely breach of 1.5C, while estimating a slightly lower average temperature of 1.53C (34.75 Fahrenheit) for the year. U.S. scientists will also publish their 2024 climate data on Friday. Climate change is worsening storms and torrential rainfall, because a hotter atmosphere can hold more water, leading to intense downpours. Concentrations in the atmosphere of carbon dioxide, the main greenhouse gas, reached a fresh high of 422 parts per million in 2024, C3S said.

The Summary The Los Angeles-area fires are a worst-case scenario caused by powerful winds that struck after months without rain. For the Los Angeles area, the recent string of wildfires represents a worst-case scenario — unusually powerful and prolonged Santa Ana winds struck after months without significant rain. But the steep consequences of the blazes are not a surprise, according to an NBC News review of after-action reports following previous fires, wildfire risk maps, public meetings about wildfire risk and interviews with fire experts. The fires have forced nearly 180,000 people to evacuate, cut power to nearly half a million customers and burned thousands of homes. “It was not if, it was when” said Joe Scott, the chief fire scientist at Pyrologix, a wildfire risk consultancy that worked on the federal analysis.

BEIJING — The Chinese central bank halted its government bond purchases Friday in an attempt to slow a one-way bonds trade that's put unwanted downward pressure on the yuan, analysts said. China's 10-year bond yield plunged to a record low this month, while the Chinese currency traded in Hong Kong on Wednesday hit its weakest against the U.S. dollar in more than a year. Compared with the U.S. Treasury 10-year bond yield of 4.68%, the yield on the Chinese government 10-year bond is around 1.64%. Supporting the yuanChina has also recently ramped up efforts to support the yuan by issuing bills in the Hong Kong market. The PBOC will auction 60 billion yuan in six-month bills in Hong Kong on Jan. 15, the Hong Kong Monetary Authority said Thursday.
