Almost five years after Covid blew into our lives, the main thing standing between us and the next global pandemic is luck. And with the advent of flu season, that luck may well be running out. Farmworkers have so far avoided tragedy, as the virus has not yet acquired the genetic tools to spread among humans. As bad as the Biden administration has been on pandemic prevention, of course, it’s about to be replaced by something far worse. Kennedy may even be hastening its arrival through his advocacy for raw milk, which can carry high levels of the H5N1 virus and is considered a possible vector for its transmission.

Two starkly different House candidates, in separate races, personify the intensifying ideological partitioning occurring within the once strongly Democratic constituency of Latino voters, whose numbers are growing. Their highly competitive races, along with a few other California congressional races, have pushed Latino voters to the front lines of the bitter fight for control of the House. “We have centered on Latino voters in our campaign,” said Whitesides, whose wife is of Cuban and Salvadoran heritage. In the same poll, 52% of Latino voters in District 27 said they support Whitesides, compared to 24% for Garcia and 24% completely undecided. In the last presidential election, Latino turnout was very high, and now it “actually is approaching the turnout rate for non-Latinos,” Vargas said.

A scorching streak in Phoenix has set new daily records for 10 straight days during an October heat wave sweeping much of the West. The forecast calls for this streak of broken records to potentially reach up to 16 days in a row. The current record at a U.S. climate station for the number of consecutive daily record highs is 14 from Burlington, Iowa, recorded during the Dust Bowl in 1936. Dozens more October monthly record highs were set Thursday in states such as Kansas and Nebraska. A study from Texas A&M, however, projects the actual number could be four times greater, with approximately 11,000 Americans dying from extreme heat last year. LOS ANGELES (AP) — A judge has recommended that conservative attorney John Eastman lose his California law license over his efforts to keep former President Donald Trump in power after the 2020 election. State Bar Court of California Judge Yvette Roland's recommendation, issued Wednesday, now goes to the California Supreme Court for a final ruling on whether he should be disbarred. The California State Bar is a regulatory agency and the only court system in the U.S. that is dedicated to attorney discipline. Eastman has been a member of the California Bar since 1997, according to its website. He ran for California attorney general in 2010, finishing second in the Republican primary.

A former software engineer at Google has been charged with stealing artificial intelligence technology from the company while secretly working with two companies based in China, the Justice Department said Wednesday. "The theft of innovative technology and trade secrets from American companies can cost jobs and have devastating economic and national security consequences."
