Their top objective is to extend the 2017 Trump tax law and prevent $3.3 trillion in tax breaks from expiring at the end of 2025. The reconciliation process bypasses the Senate's 60-vote threshold for most bills, requiring just a majority vote to pass a tax- and spending package once per fiscal year. Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala., said the GOP is “100%” committed to extending the Trump tax cuts but with “some deviations” from existing law. I’ve heard more than three people [in the House] say that they won’t vote for a tax package that’s not fully offset. “And then we can sit down and work through some areas that we might find agreement on for a second reconciliation bill, as well.”

Republicans are headed into 2025 in control of the presidency, the Senate, and the House of Representatives. But there's still one outstanding House race yet to be called. Gray has 105,083 votes, compared to 104,856 votes for Duarte, according to the California Secretary of State's office. The race is a rematch of their 2022 contest, which saw Duarte ultimately defeat Gray by 564 votes out of nearly 134,000 ballots cast. Due to the number of competitive US House races in California, a state with over 22 million registered voters, control of the chamber can theoretically rest on the Golden State alone.

Gonzalez did his own spending and campaigning, but amid an onslaught of Republican spending in the region’s elections, the DCCC ads were welcome, Gonzalez’s campaign said. “We did historic investments when it came to Latino voters and voters of color,” said Maríafernanda Zacarías, DCCC senior adviser for Latino engagement. That Latino spending was just one portion of the big-money ultimately unsuccessful effort to hold the House Democratic majority. Democrats invested in holding their Latino support and “mostly succeeded,” said Angle, who runs the Lone Star Project supporting Texas Democrats. Republican Rep. Mike Garcia defeated Democrat Christy Smith to return to Congress for California’s 27th Congressional District, based in northern Los Angeles.
