PARIS — Everywhere you looked at the 2024 Paris Games, Americans dominated. On the final day of the Games, China is leading Team USA in the medal table, with 39 golds to America’s 38. Its two golds here included the 4x100-meter medley, the first time in Olympic history that anyone had beaten the U.S. Though Russia, a longtime dominant force in the sport, was excluded from these Games, China still achieved a score that far outstripped any competitors. China has also been quick to embrace some of the newer Olympic sports including sport climbing, skateboarding, surfing and breaking.

While both numbers were more than any other nation, it was a slight step back by supremely high U.S. standards. No American man had won an individual gold this meet until Finke set his world mark. “The whole ‘the men’s team hasn’t won an individual gold medal’ [narrative] was in the back of my mind,” he told reporters. The U.S. team of Ryan Murphy, Nic Fink, Caeleb Dressel and Hunter Armstrong took silver and France the bronze. “The wealth is just getting spread around, we’re not getting any worse,” said Dressel, who took home two golds and a silver from these Games.

The days before the Olympic swimming competition are often a chance for the world’s best swimmers to share their hopes and expectations. This year, it was the latest chance to air their grievances. There was talk of Chinese doping, demands for transparency and simmering anger. Much of the latter was focused on disappointment and disillusionment with the global antidoping system, and the irritation was international. Chinese journalists complained of unfair scrutiny.

The 29-year-old Sjoestroem touched the wall in 24.77 seconds to deny Zhang, who was 0.28 seconds behind, while Gretchen Walsh of the United States took bronze. Australia's Cameron McEvoy then won the men's 50m freestyle gold in a superb time of 21.06 seconds, beating silver medallist Jack Alexy of the U.S. by 0.51 seconds. The absence of 2022 men's 100m butterfly champion Kristof Milak and Olympic gold medallist Caeleb Dressel, who also has the world record, will add a dash of uncertainty to the final later in the evening. But she can expect a tough test from American Regan Smith, who was second in the semis, and Australia's Olympic and world champion Kaylee McKeown who also holds the world record of 2:03.14 in the event having set that time in March. The Australian mixed 4x100m freestyle relay team have a shot at lowering their world record of 3:19.38 in the last race after cruising through the heats and going nearly two seconds faster than the United States.

During the eight months Caeleb Dressel spent not swimming, he was surprised by the things he came to miss. Some were simple, like blowing bubbles in the water or the feel of his toes on the grip tape of the starting blocks. But he also missed the chlorine — a swimmer’s nemesis — and the dry skin that comes with hours spent in the pool. But last June, he abruptly withdrew from the world championships because of an undisclosed health issue and disappeared from the sport and the spotlight. His best finish in four events was third place in the 50-meter butterfly, not good enough to qualify for the upcoming world championships.

July 1 (Reuters) - Seven-time Olympic gold medalist Caeleb Dressel failed to qualify for this month's World Aquatics Championships in Japan after more disappointing results at the U.S. National Championships in Indianapolis on Saturday. In his final chance to make the U.S. team, Dressel finished tied for 22nd in the preliminaries of the 50-metre freestyle, 1.07 seconds behind the leader. Dressel's struggles were not wholly unexpected as the 26-year-old has not competed in a major meet since abruptly pulling out of the world championships in Budapest last summer citing an unspecified health issue. "He's very happy where he's at now," University of Florida head coach Anthony Nesty was quoted as saying by SwimSwam on Saturday. Nesty said Dressel is capable of getting off to excellent starts but struggles to close races.
