CNN —A beloved Florida high school football player died after he collapsed during a game Friday night, school officials say, bringing the number of recent known deaths among high school athletes to seven. Alabama teen Semaj Wilkins died August 13 after a medical emergency during football practice at New Brockton High School, according to CNN affiliate WDHN. His smile radiatedGainer scored two touchdowns on the night of his death, Norton said, leading the team to victory. The high school there has about 500 students and is very close knit. Gainer had recently visited Vanderbilt University in Nashville, where he had hoped to play football, according to Norton.

CNN —Mist rising from the Tuscan hills, a tiny fish staring at the ocean from inside the neck of a glass bottle, and a pangolin tucked contentedly under the chin of her carer are among the winning entries from the 2023 Travel Photographer of the Year competition. Shot all around the globe, the images illuminate both the beauty and tragedy that arise when humans interact with the natural world. Judges crowned Slovenian photographer AndreJa Ravnak the overall winner for her depictions of dream-like European landscapes, after considering more than 20,000 images submitted by photographers from more than 150 countries. Meanwhile, 14-year-old Caden Shepard Choi won the Young Travel Photographer of the Year award for her black-and-white series of photos depicting the Navajo people of Chinle, Arizona herding sheep, shearing them and then weaving with the wool. All the winning photos can be viewed online, or at an exhibition held at the NEC in Birmingham, UK from March 16-19 and at Xposure in Sharjah, UAE.

In mesmerizing moments like this, FastHorse neatly sets up the tension between identity and the performance of identity — a tension she doesn’t resolve but upgrades over the course of the play to a full-scale paradox. FastHorse, a member of the Sicangu Lakota nation of South Dakota, gradually introduces the horrifying undertow of that fact with filmed segments screened briefly between the live scenes. Distressingly, these segments are based on Thanksgiving projects that real teachers have posted online. In one, adorable young children performing “The Nine Days of Thanksgiving” are made to list the many things, like “six Native teepees,” that Indians “gave” the Pilgrims. Though this is crucial to the play’s project of undoing centuries of racist mythologizing, I was left a bit queasy thinking about the young performers.

A man and his stepson were arrested this week on several Capitol riot charges. Prosecutors say Richard Slaughter and Caden Paul Gottfried fought cops in a Capitol tunnel Jan. 6. Richard Slaughter, 40, and Caden Paul Gottfried, 20, were arrested and charged Wednesday for their role in the January 6, 2021 insurrection. Gottfried was also in the tunnel and used his body weight to push against the guarding officers, according to prosecutors. Slaughter was sworn in as an Orting School District school board director in December 2021.
