New York City Mayor Eric Adams has been hit with five federal charges – including wire fraud, bribery and solicitation of a contribution by a foreign national – according to a sprawling 57-page federal indictment unsealed Thursday. Although the Bentley Suite for two nights would have cost approximately $7,000, Adams paid less than $600, the indictment says. And so, the building opened as requested by a Turkish official who had plied Adams with travel benefits and other gifts, the indictment says. In addition to the free travel and hotel rooms, Adams received illegal campaign contributions from foreign donors, including the Turkish government official, the indictment says. A police officer died on Monday after being shot during a traffic stop in Queens, the police and city officials said. NEW YORK (AP) — A 15-year-old accused of shooting a Brazilian tourist in the leg in Times Square Thursday night and then firing at a police officer was charged Saturday as an adult with two counts of attempted murder. The teen also faces assault and weapons possession charges stemming from the shooting that began in a sporting goods store and spilled out onto the streets of Midtown Manhattan. Police took the teen into custody Friday at a residential house that police believe may be linked to a family member in Yonkers. He is also considered a suspect in an armed robbery in the Bronx and a separate shooting in Times Square last month, police said. "As tensions rise around the globe, there is a growing concern over the impact it will have here at home," said Caban. Police in New York City adopted a "heightened" security footing for Halloween this week, as other large U.S. cities were also on alert, a time of tension over the Israel-Palestinian conflict. City officials mounted a super-sized surveillance and law enforcement effort for the 2013 race, which took place months after the Boston Marathon bombings, while the 2016 edition also featured increased security.

Edward Caban, who grew up in the Bronx as the son of a Puerto Rican transit police detective, on Monday became the first Latino officer to lead the New York Police Department in its 177-year history. Mayor Eric Adams announced the appointment of Mr. Caban, who had been serving as acting police commissioner, in a morning news conference in front of the 40th Precinct in the South Bronx, where Mr. Caban began his career as a police officer in 1991. The move came just over a month after Commissioner Keechant Sewell, the first woman to serve in the role, resigned after only 18 months, frustrated in her attempts to act with autonomy. Mr. Caban, who had previously served as first deputy commissioner, had remained close to the mayor through Commissioner Sewell’s tenure. He will oversee roughly 36,000 officers and 19,000 civilian employees.
