That is just one reason why policy experts see a retirement savings crisis on tap for so many Americans over the next several decades. This results in an increase in retirement income of $150 per month,” Gusto’s researchers wrote. Initial data also suggests that the introduction of auto IRAs might correlate with more employers offering their own plans. It’s not entirely clear why, since smaller businesses often cite cost and administrative burden as reasons why they don’t sponsor a retirement plan. And employer plans offer workers tax breaks and direct matching contributions, which can help them grow their nest eggs faster than they otherwise might.

Just 20 years ago journalists covered the tech industry "like it didn't matter, like it was this hobbyist, interesting, plucky thing." The pro-tech media gives tech's main characters the chance to write their way back to the original storyline. Trae Stephens, a partner at Founders Fund, described Pirate Wires as a kind of daily affirmation for Silicon Valley. For nearly two decades, Hollywood has seemingly missed no opportunity to sound the alarm about climate change. So it was startling when the weather-focused “Twisters” arrived from Universal Pictures this month with no mention of climate change at all. If ever there was a perfect vehicle to carry Hollywood’s progressive climate change messaging — a big-budget movie about people caught in worsening storm patterns — wasn’t this it? Apparently not. Movies should not be about “preaching a message,” Lee Isaac Chung, who directed “Twisters,” said in a prerelease interview that served as a dog whistle to conservative ticket buyers.

Soon, he could well become prime minister if RN wins an absolute majority in the forthcoming parliamentary elections — and he's only 28. Bardella's rise from party spokesman in 2017 to party president over the course of five years is somewhat remarkable for a man who is only 28. Bardella excelled in economics and social sciences at a private college and joined National Rally — then known as the National Front — at the age of 16. Two years later, he became a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) before being made party president in 2022. Jordan Bardella, president of the National Rally, speaks to members of the media as he arrives at Medef in Paris, France, on Thursday, June 20, 2024.

In fact, for him at least, one is not about the other; Seinfeld openly disdains politics. Like Seinfeld, Carolla imagines parts of the 20th century as a better time. Women got more jobs and power (despite, Carolla writes, being “better at home with the kids than in the workplace”) and men became metrosexuals. The masculinity they defend is adamantly heterosexual, threatened not just by women but also by gay men and gender non-confirming people. In fact, the call for a return to 1950s-style masculinity has found a number of high-profile political supporters in recent years.

For 20 years, Participant Media has been Hollywood’s pre-eminent maker of activist entertainment, backing socially conscious films like “An Inconvenient Truth,” a climate change cri de coeur, and “Wonder,” about a boy with birth defects. Its movies have won 21 Academy Awards. But the company never quite managed to do good while also making money, at least not consistently. Streaming services like Disney+ and Netflix have started to sell ads, and advertisers prefer all-audience, apolitical content. Eat-your-broccoli documentaries and dramas that explore underrepresented communities (both Participant sweet spots) are harder to sell than ever.

There is no loneliness epidemic
  + stars: | 2024-04-07 | by ( Eliza Relman | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +17 min
With the report, a steady trickle of headlines about the epidemic turned into a firehose: "Loneliness is at epidemic levels and it's killing Americans" (USA Today); "This Epidemic of Isolation Is as Harmful as Smoking" (Bloomberg); "America's Loneliness Epidemic Comes for the Restaurant" (The Atlantic). There's one problem: The loneliness epidemic doesn't exist. Even the authors caution in their meta-analysis that "the frequently used term 'loneliness epidemic' seems exaggerated." Calling it a "loneliness epidemic," then, may be a bit like calling COVID a "sneezing pandemic." "There are many, many surveys that are just making up questions about loneliness and are not using the UCLA Loneliness Scale or some other validated loneliness scale," she says.

China risks a "lost decade" of slow growth if it doesn't reform its economy, warns an economist. AdvertisementChina faces a "lost decade" of sluggish economic growth much like Japan if it doesn't reform its economy, according to an economist. "China could certainly have a lost decade of growth," Rory Green, the chief China economist at GlobalData.TS Lombard, wrote in a note on Thursday. Leaders are attempting to create a new political-economic model, one less reliant on debt-fueled property-led growth," wrote Green. Meanwhile, technocrats in China generally believe China needs to reform and grow — or risk a Japan-style lost decade, Green added.

Fog clouded the San Jacinto Mountains recently as Brad Fuhr approached the headquarters of KGAY, a radio station in an undistinguished Palm Springs, California, strip mall. KGAY’s call letters aren’t a fluke but a savvy marketing tool. It’s the only terrestrial radio station in America geared toward L.G.B.T.Q. (There’s WGAY, a “party station” in the Florida Keys, but it doesn’t market itself as gay.) Three other D.J.s — Eric Ornelas, Galaxy and ModGirl — provide the station with homemade mix shows that play around the clock.

Chinese Yuan and U.S. dollar banknotes are seen in this illustration taken March 10, 2023. The surge in their borrowing from Chinese banks has catapulted the yuan past the euro into becoming the second-biggest currency used in global trade finance, providing a fillip to Beijing's ambitions to internationalize the yuan. "Panda bonds are steadily promoting the renminbi's function as a funding currency", the People's Bank of China (PBOC) said a report last month. German automaker Volkswagen Group (VOWG_p.DE) told Reuters it will use its inaugural 1.5 billion yuan panda bond proceeds only for its onshore China business. A self-described high school dropout living in a camper with a tarp on the roof sings a plaintive cri de coeur about blue collar workers being shafted by the wealthy, and it is right-wing Republicans who rush to embrace him while Democrats wag their fingers and scold him for insensitivity. Have Democrats retreated so far from their workingman roots that their knee-jerk impulse is to dump on a blue collar guy who highlights “folks in the street, ain’t got nothin’ to eat”? “I’ve been sellin’ my soul, workin’ all day,” Anthony laments. He blames the travails of workers on “rich men north of Richmond” — a swipe at Washington and elites generally. Some of his lines aren’t so different from elements in F.D.R.’s speech about “the forgotten man” or in Robert Kennedy’s elegy for “the shattered dreams of others.”

Italy struggles with spike in migrant arrivals
  + stars: | 2023-08-28 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
Newly arrived migrants wait to embark on a ferry to the mainland, in the Sicilian island of Lampedusa, Italy, August 27, 2023. On Lampedusa island, Italy's southernmost outpost, more than 4,200 people landed over the weekend, local police chief Emanuele Ricifari told Reuters. Italy has recorded more than 107,500 sea arrivals in the year to date, compared with around 53,000 in the same period last year. The spike has partly been driven by an increase in the ranks of unaccompanied minors making the perilous sea journey to Italy. The Italian Red Cross (CRI) took over the running of the facility on June 1, replacing a cooperative that had been criticised for failing to provide adequate care.
