Many women start experiencing menopausal symptoms during those years of perimenopause, such as irregular periods, fatigue, sleep disturbances, hot flashes and weight gain. For most women, periods don’t stop suddenly, although there are exceptions when menopause is induced by surgery or certain medical treatments that stop ovarian function. Perimenopause is the several years preceding menopause, so the most common age for women to begin perimenopause is in their 40s. During perimenopause, hormone levels fluctuate a lot, and a test one day may look very different than one the next. CNN: Where should people go for more information on perimenopause and menopause?

When the power goes out, it’s a race against time to make sure food doesn’t spoil. “Bacteria multiply quickly between temperatures of 40 degrees Fahrenheit and 140 degrees Fahrenheit,” CNN wellness expert Dr. Leana Wen told CNN. Once the power is cut, a full freezer can hold a safe temperature for 48 hours with the door closed. They should also be kept in separate areas of the refrigerator any day of the week, regardless of the weather. Are trampolines safe for kids? A doctor explains
  + stars: | 2024-09-17 | by ( Katia Hetter | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +8 min
The American Academy of Pediatrics issued a statement in 2012 to strongly recommend against the use of recreational trampolines in kids. Jumpers on the same apparatus increases injury risk, especially for the smallest individuals, according to the AAP. The report also found that injuries from full-size trampolines had a six times higher risk of requiring surgery compared with injuries from mini-size trampolines. Stay close to your child and instruct them not to try dangerous maneuvers like flips. If our kids do go to a home that has trampolines, we try to steer them away from the trampoline.

They may think of energy drinks as sports drinks or consider them appropriate for hydration, including for children. Dr. Leana Wen: While there is no standard definition of energy drinks, typically these are drinks marketed to increase attention, alertness and energy. CNN: Are energy drinks the same thing as sports drinks? Those concerned about electrolyte loss, such as endurance athletes and people who have to work outdoors in hot weather, should consider sports drinks — not energy drinks. Energy drinks may offer a quick energy boost, but they have potential risks and are not a good long-term solution.

This is in the context of near-universal use of social media, with up to 95% of kids ages 13 to 17 reporting using social media. American teens report spending a shocking amount of time — nearly five hours each day—on YouTube, TikTok, Instagram and other social media apps. There are a number of problems with this level of social media use, one of which is what this time is replacing. Third, for those whose kids already have smartphones and use social media apps, speak with them about the impact of social media on them.

Around 90% of women experience menopausal symptoms, which can include hot flashes, sleep disturbances, mood alterations and weight gain. Some 94% of US women reported never being taught about menopause at school, according to a 2023 study. Most women go into menopause between ages 40 and 58, with the average age of experiencing menopause being 51, according to the North American Menopause Society. Last year, the US Food and Drug Administration approved a medication, fezolinetant, specifically for use in reducing hot flashes. However, studies have shown that many providers are not trained to provide the full range of options for menopause treatment.

As families shop for school supplies, how should they prepare for the spread of viruses and other diseases? Dr. Leana Wen: Historically, respiratory illnesses peak later in the year when the weather gets cooler. CNN: As families shop for school supplies, should they also pick up Covid tests or medications to treat respiratory illnesses? Despite using these and other preventive measures, it’s likely that kids will contract respiratory viruses many times during the school year. Which means adults would also do well to prepare for what happens if we get sick — and take preventive measures accordingly, too.

To sort out my smartwatch health and fitness questions, I spoke with CNN wellness expert Dr. Leana Wen. A smartwatch with a heart rate monitor can help athletes track their heart rates to keep them in a certain range. Wen: What a lot of active people do is to track heart rate during exercise to keep the heart rate in a certain range. This is where the heart rate is under 70% to 75% of your maximal heart rate. Many smartwatches track sleep and can tell you how long you’ve slept and how much time you spent in each sleep stage.

California is likely to be especially hard hit, with highs passing 110 degrees Fahrenheit (43 degrees Celsius) in many areas. For instance, chicken should be cooked to an internal temperature of at least 165 degrees Fahrenheit, and ground beef should be cooked to at least 160 degrees Fahrenheit. That applies to cooked meat like hamburgers as well as perishable salads like potato salad and cole slaw. Not only can raw milk harbor bacteria, but it is also possible that raw milk can transmit the bird flu. It wasn’t advisable for people to drink raw milk or consume products made from raw milk prior to the bird flu outbreak, and it certainly is not advisable now.

Why water is the best drink during a heat wave
  + stars: | 2024-06-25 | by ( Katia Hetter | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +8 min
We know that keeping hydrated is important to staying healthy in the summer heat, but is water still the best drink during a heat wave? CNN: When it’s really hot outside, is water still the best fluid, or should people turn to sports drinks? Energy drinks are different from sports drinks, which are meant to help you restore water and electrolytes. I urge parents to be careful to distinguish between sports drinks and energy drinks. Sports drinks probably aren’t needed, and, again, it’s advisable for children to avoid energy drinks.
