On average, the S & P 500 is usually up 2% 65 days before the first cut from the central bank following a hiking cycle, according to data from Strategas. But it's usually down by 1.5% 65 days after that initial rate reduction, implying that stocks may not be off to the races after the big announcement. In 1974, for example, the S & P 500 was down more than 8% in the 65 days prior and off by more than 25% in the same period following the cut. But in 1989, the broad index was up more than 12% in the 65 days preceding the rate reduction and still higher by more than 9% in the period after. Fed funds futures indicate a chance of at least one rate cut as early as September, with the potential for a second at the last meeting of the year in December, according to CMEGroup's FedWatch tool .

The Fed and economic policy were top of mind this week given the central bank's Wednesday decision to yet again leave interest rates unchanged , as it has since last summer. This week included the conclusion of April's trading month, which marked the first down month of the year for all three major market averages. Indeed, some recent earnings reports have raised doubts about the economy, with brands from McDonald's and Starbucks evidencing signs of strain among consumers. While no new inflation numbers are scheduled for release next week, investors will see reports on March wholesale inventories, March consumer credit and May consumer sentiment from the University of Michigan. AI trade Though interest rates took center stage this week, investors also continued monitoring companies tied to the artificial intelligence boom amid the stocks' recent choppiness.

Even as the S & P 500 nears a new high, JPMorgan's Dubravko Lakos-Bujas remains relatively pessimistic on how 2024 will pan out. In a Friday client report, he called the early results and forward guidance from S & P 500 companies "lackluster." Just about one out of every 10 S & P 500 companies has reported results, according to FactSet. His concerns come as the S & P 500 is poised to hit an all-time high closing level on Friday. June 26 (Reuters) - U.S. stocks closed lower on Monday, as investors were wary of making riskier bets after Russia's aborted weekend mutiny. With this uncertainty in mind Schleif noted that investors were taking some profits in growth stocks that had advanced sharply this year.
