Paul Tazewell was 16 years old and living in Akron, Ohio, the first time he designed costumes for “The Wiz.” It was a high school production, and much of the work happened in his family’s dining room. He has been summoned back to Oz several times since that first show — a workshop here, an NBC broadcast there. So when the director Jon M. Chu asked him to design the costumes for Universal’s long-awaited film adaptation of the Broadway musical “Wicked,” there was little learning curve to speak of. A prequel of sorts to “The Wizard of Oz,” “Wicked” centers on two reluctant roommates at Shiz University: Galinda, an effervescent daughter of privilege who goes on to drop a vowel (that first “a”), and Elphaba, a green-skinned outcast who goes on to pick up a title (the Wicked Witch of the West).

Can you sing along to “Wicked” show tunes in a movie theater? “I don’t want to hear you singing.”The discourse surrounding “Wicked” mirrors other recent conversations about etiquette at public gatherings. However, when it comes to movie theater etiquette, the conversation has largely centered around people using their devices during the film. Williams is among the contingent of “Wicked” fans who think singing along in a theater wouldn’t be the worst offense. “But come a second time and let us sing to you.”“We understand it if you do, and if you don’t,” Grande added.

Related VideoIt remains true even as Universal is marketing the movie as "Wicked," instead of "Wicked Part One." Elphaba's younger sister, Nessa, has become a cruel governor of Munchkinland and earned the title of the Wicked Witch of the East. There has been no casting announcement to suggest Dorothy will have a larger role in the second film.

Advertisement"Wicked," directed by Jon M. Chu, is a film adaptation of the iconic stage musical — well, just act one. Directed by Jon M. Chu ("Crazy Rich Asians") and starring Broadway and pop music's biggest legends — Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, respectively — "Wicked" is a stunning act of adaptation. The stage musical version is also an adaptation, the looser kind, of Gregory Maguire's novel of the same name. AdvertisementAs in the stage musical, Glinda lends Elphaba the ugliest hat in her closet for a party. In the end, though, "Wicked" is one of the best musical adaptations recently put to screen.

Dollar eyes weekly gain on slower Fed easing, inflation outlook

The euro was in turn on track for its worst weekly performance in seven months with a fall of 1.75%. Sterling traded 0.02% lower at $1.2666 and was similarly set to lose 2% for the week, its worst weekly fall since January 2023. Higher trade tariffs and tighter immigration under President-elect Trump's incoming administration are projected to fuel inflation, potentially slowing the Fed's easing cycle longer term. The yen was last 0.2% lower at 156.57 per dollar, on track for a weekly decline of 2.5%. Elsewhere, the Australian dollar eased 0.06% to $0.6450 and was set to lose just over 2% for the week, its worst weekly performance in four months.

“Wicked” director Jon M. Chu reflected on how the feature film might have greater meaning in the wake of the election. “‘The Wizard of Oz’ was always sort of prophetic in a way,” Chu said. Nina Westervelt / WWD via Getty ImagesNBC News and NBCUniversal, the distributor of “Wicked,” share Comcast as a parent company. Chu said the musical adaptation, which premiered on Broadway in 2003, was also coincidentally released during a momentous time. “When ‘Wicked’ came around, it was a re-examination of that,” Chu said.

But multiplex owners are hoping that “Wicked” and “Gladiator II” achieve something close as the pink-and-green musical and the Colosseum-set action epic land in theaters on Nov. 22. “The industry is looking at ‘Wicked,’ ‘Gladiator II’ and ‘Moana 2’ as a Holy Trinity of moviegoing,” says Robbins. Overall domestic box office revenues are down more than 11% from 2023 and nearly 27% from 2019, according to Comscore. Newer attempts like Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story” remake, Chu’s “In the Heights,” “Dear Evan Hansen,” “Cats” and “The Color Purple” all fizzled at the box office despite being based on popular productions. “Gladiator II,” too, must prove to audiences there’s a reason to return to the arena a quarter century after the first film became a Colosseum-sized blockbuster.

CNN —Authorities in Taiwan are warning residents along its eastern coast to brace for the impacts Super Typhoon Kong-rey, which has rapidly intensified as it barrels towards the island after bashing the Philippines. Kong-rey, moving northwest over the Philippine Sea, reached super-typhoon strength on Wednesday, according to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC). More than 6,000 first responders have also been put on standby to assist in response to the typhoon, according to the Central Emergency Operations Center. Two outlying islands of Taiwan, Green Island and Orchid Island, suspended work and classes on Wednesday, according the county government. As of Wednesday morning, Kong-rey continued to skirt the island’s north as it moved towards Taiwan.

For Carter Worth, there's one that stands out above all others: volume. They say it's all in the price action. … but volume is the essential criteria," Worth, the founder of Worth Charting with more than three decades on the Street, told CNBC's Dominic Chu in this special Pro Talks discussion available to all readers. "The study of volume and price volume correlation is the single most important thing one can do if one wants to engage in pattern recognition and studying price action trying to profit in the market." "[Philosophers] Camus and Sartre would argue that existence precedes essence, and in markets, volume precedes price," he added.
