AdvertisementI'm a professional baker and I tried 10 desserts from Whole Foods' bakery section. The brownies and macarons were disappointing for me and the berry Chantilly cake was just OK. Its cult-favorite berry Chantilly cake even recently went viral when the chain tried to change its recipe. AdvertisementBut just how good are Whole Foods' desserts, really? As a professional baker, recipe developer, and former bakery owner, I always prefer home-baked desserts, but I recognize that sometimes you need a quick fix or an easy pick-up-and-go treat for a special occasion.

Chipotle shareholder sues over skimpy portion sizes

New York CNN —A Chipotle shareholder is suing the fast-casual chain over viral social media complaints about skimpy portion sizes. The proposed class-action lawsuit filed Monday claims Chipotle understated customer dissatisfaction regarding its “highly inconsistent” portion sizes in official disclosures. “First, there was never a directive to provide less to our customers,” Niccol said during the earnings call. After that earnings call on October 30, Chipotle stock dipped 7.86%. The proposed class action would make eligible anyone who purchased or sold Chipotle stock from February 8 to October 29, 2024.

New York CNN —These past few years, it seems like food companies have been playing some serious mind games with us. As food companies have seen their costs rise substantially over the past few years, many have used two sneaky strategies, dubbed shrinkflation and skimpflation, to avoid having to raise the prices of their goods. Yet when companies simply pass along price increases to consumers, there’s also no shortage of backlash — just ask McDonald’s. So the days of shrinkflation, at least when it comes to food, could be numbered. “I would expect (food companies) to shift their strategy and find a different mind game to play that maybe people are not quite looking out for yet,” Hydock said.

New York CNN —Fans of Whole Foods’ iconic Berry Chantilly Cake have been up in arms on social media over the past few weeks. Berry Chantilly fans say they were victims of skimpflation, a member of the shrinkflation and inflation family. Whole Foods customers were quick to catch on, and by Friday, the company announced it had reversed its changes. “Based on feedback from our customers, we will reintroduce single slices of the Berry Chantilly Cake that are the same as the classic our customers know and love,” a Whole Foods spokesperson told CNN on Friday. The cake slices will be back to their previous version by next week, the company said.

CNNOver the last few decades, a growing number of Christians have left traditional, predominantly White evangelical churches. The post-evangelical movement predates former President Donald Trump’s political rise, but has been accelerated by his alliance with White conservative evangelical leaders. White evangelicals have been a key part of the Republican coalition since the 1980s. The exit polls estimated that 26% of 2016 voters and 28% of 2020 voters were White evangelicals. Still, Trump has maintained overwhelming support among White evangelicals since consolidating their support during the 2016 Republican primary.

A Washington DC developer was forced to build a skinny home — six feet wide at its narrowest point. Zoning laws made it hard to build any bigger on the 0.02-acre property, the listing agent said. The narrow home listed for $799,900 in July 2023, but the price just dropped further to $570,265. The painter John Singer Sargent has sometimes been dismissed as an artist of flattery and frivolity — a portraitist-for-hire who catered to the vanities of his elite subjects, whether they were British aristocrats or Boston Brahmins. Often, these criticisms have centered on fashion: The writer D.H. Lawrence once ridiculed Sargent’s works as “nothing but yards and yards of satin from the most expensive shops, with some pretty head propped up on the top.”The exhibition “Fashioned by Sargent,” at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, which travels to Tate Britain early next year, skillfully parries these jabs with some 50 canvases in which style and substance are deeply intertwined. This is a show to win over even the most hard-boiled Sargent skeptics, turning a purported weakness — the artist’s obsessive attention to his subjects’ attire, expressed through both of-the-moment outfit choices and fabric-flaunting brushwork — into a strength. And yes, there are clothes — magnificent examples of couture and costuming, including some of the exact pieces worn in the paintings. Anyone partial to Julian Fellowes dramas will find, in time for the second season of “The Gilded Age,” ballroom-hushing silk and velvet dresses by the House of Worth and requisite accessories from Chantilly lace fans to the feathery swoosh of a hat ornament known as an aigrette.

Glenn Youngkin isn’t on the ballot this year, but his push for a new conservative direction for the Republican Party is. The discipline extended beyond the 10 candidates Youngkin endorsed in competitive primaries, so as to keep distractions at bay. Virginia Democrats, who would normally use such a post to put the entire GOP in an awkward position, did not apparently even notice. Still, there isn’t a lot of evidence that the Virginia Democratic Party sees Youngkin as any sort of liability for the GOP — he isn’t featured negatively in any of their ads, for example. “What we have found out over the last two years is that that vest-wearing, affable, basketball playing dad is really a MAGA Extremist,” said Virginia Democratic Party Chair Susan Swecker.

CHANTILLY, Va.—The Republican Party’s great hope sat scrunched in the back of his gubernatorial SUV, acknowledging the high-stakes gamble he has undertaken. Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin has put all his political capital on the line in Tuesday’s statehouse elections, hoping to prove that a bluish state can be persuaded to go for conservative governance and restrictions on abortion. “I don’t know how to hedge my bets,” said Youngkin, the lanky, affable former private-equity executive elected in 2021. I think that we are driving towards an outcome that I think is best for Virginia, and therefore I’m going to go to work with everything I have in order to try to deliver.”

That could make it difficult for the party to deliver a coherent message on early voting. In an advertisement that aired during the first Republican presidential debate in August, RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel said into the camera: "When Republicans vote early, we win." With Trump railing against the practice, Democrats have increased their edge in early voting. In 2022, that gap widened, with Democrats accounting for 42.5% of early ballots and Republicans 33.8%. But Youngkin advisers said their data showed the early vote campaign had brought in ballots from low-propensity voters as well.

For a brief moment, after Celine canceled its men’s wear show in Paris because of the recent unrest in France, there were concerns about whether last week’s couture shows would go as planned. Thom Browne, for his debut couture show, turned an opera house into a wonderland full of fantastical suiting. Valentino showed ethereal gowns against the backdrop of the Château de Chantilly, a palatial property outside Paris and one of the most extraordinary venues I’ve ever photographed. In the crowds outside the shows, there was noticeably less peacocking. Others traded boxy clothes, which have dominated the style of guests and fans in recent years, for pieces with softer, more fluid silhouettes.

That was where, as golden hour set in, a magic Valentino show began — with Kaia Gerber in a pair of jeans and a white shirt. Granted, they weren’t just any jeans: they were made from silk gazar entirely embroidered in micro beads dyed 80 different shades of indigo to resemble denim, but still. They looked like jeans. Jeans — or their very fancy doppelgängers — have been the biggest trend of the week. There were more jeans, likewise made from trompe l’oeil beading, in the Jean Paul Gaultier collection guest designed by Julien Dossena, and lots of jeans in all stages of distress at Balenciaga, which also were not denim at all but oil-painted canvas that took two and a half months to create.

She wasn't ready but thought if she waited, she'd never be able to afford a house. She talked about the pressure to buy and how she had to change her life to afford homeownership. We were saving around $4,000 a month, so we thought that a $6,000 monthly mortgage payment would be doable. Our take-home pay each month is a bit more than $11,000, and our monthly mortgage payment is about $6,800. We've realized we're going to have to make some substantial lifestyle changes to be able to afford the house.
