Why ABC News settled with Donald Trump for $15 million
  + stars: | 2024-12-16 | by ( Brian Stelter | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +5 min
CNN —George Stephanopoulos ended Sunday’s “This Week” program without any mention of him or ABC News settling Donald Trump’s defamation lawsuit against them. The suit was triggered by a segment on “This Week,” but ABC News has not reported on TV at all its agreement to pay $15 million to Trump’s presidential foundation at all. But the speculation – about why ABC agreed to settle, and why now, and why at such expense - has not gone away. Some Trump critics on the left are also certain that they know what’s going on: They say ABC and parent company Disney are bowing to Trump for craven political purposes. According to court documents, ABC and Trump’s team agreed to the settlement terms last Friday.

The attorney general of the District of Columbia sued Amazon on Wednesday, accusing it of violating consumer protection laws by making slower deliveries to Prime members in historically lower-income neighborhoods. According to the lawsuit, Amazon has used third parties like United Parcel Service and the Postal Service to make Prime deliveries in those areas for the past two years. That resulted in slower deliveries than those made by Amazon’s own delivery drivers, who serve other Washington residents. Amazon “cannot covertly decide that a dollar in one ZIP code is worth less than a dollar in another,” Mr. Schwalb said in a statement. “We’re suing to stop this deceptive conduct and make sure District residents get what they’re paying for.”

“Who the hell wants to hear questions?” Trump said at the event where the entire point was to take audience questions. It’s bizarre and raises more and more concerns for voters," said a Harris campaign adviser who also previously worked for President Joe Biden. “President Trump has more energy and more stamina than anyone in politics, and is the smartest leader this country has ever seen,” the statement read. Once it was clear that Trump wanted to listen to music, campaign staff behind the scenes started to scramble to accommodate the request. Almost 30 minutes into the town hall event, Trump paused the event so someone in the audience could receive treatment. Two minutes later, as Trump faced the fifth question of the night, another person became ill and the song played again. But the parade of major federal cases challenging the power of the tech giants is just getting going. Last week, the American Civil Liberties Union sent 300 high school students to Capitol Hill to lobby against the Kids Online Safety Act, a bill meant to protect children online. The teenagers told the staffs of 85 lawmakers that the legislation could censor important conversations, particularly among marginalized groups like L.G.B.T.Q. “Regardless of your political perspective, this looks like a censorship bill.”The effort was one of many escalations in recent months by those who oppose the bill. In June, a progressive nonprofit, Fight for the Future, organized students to write hundreds of letters to urge lawmakers to scrap it. Conservative groups like Patriot Voices, founded by the former Republican senator Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania, are also protesting with an online petition.

Over the past three years, Vice President Kamala Harris has taken a leading role inside the White House on artificial intelligence as the technology is taking off. czar, she brought the chiefs of OpenAI, Microsoft, Google and Anthropic to the White House to agree on voluntary safety standards for the technology. She led a White House executive order mandating how the federal government would use and develop A.I. “We can and we must do both.”Now, as the Democratic Party’s presumptive presidential nominee, a win for Ms. Harris could mean a continued relatively smooth runway for A.I. companies, which have enjoyed little U.S. regulation and the chance to shape White House and Congressional views on the technology.

A federal judge in Florida on Wednesday allowed former President Donald J. Trump’s defamation suit against ABC News to move forward, rejecting an effort by the television network to dismiss the litigation as spurious. The lawsuit, filed in March, argued that ABC’s star anchor, George Stephanopoulos, defamed Mr. Trump by saying on-air numerous times, in a March 10 segment on “This Week,” that the former president had been found liable for raping the writer E. Jean Carroll. Mr. Trump was found liable last year in a Manhattan civil case for sexually abusing and defaming Ms. Carroll. The jury did not find Mr. Trump liable on a technical charge of rape, which is narrowly defined in New York State law. “But a reasonable jury could conclude Plaintiff was defamed and, as a result, dismissal is inappropriate.”

Washington CNN —A federal judge on Wednesday refused to dismiss former President Donald Trump’s lawsuit against ABC News and George Stephanopoulos over the anchor’s assertion that a jury concluded Trump had “raped” E. Jean Carroll. Trump filed the lawsuit in Florida federal court earlier this year, arguing that Stephanopoulos and the network defamed him when Stephanopoulos said during a contentious on-air interview with Rep. Nancy Mace that a jury found Trump had “raped” Carroll, a writer whose own cases against Trump led to him being found liable for sexual abuse. ABC News did not immediately respond to a CNN request for comment. In the Trump-ABC lawsuit, US District Judge Cecilia Altonaga, an appointee of former President George W. Bush, wrote Wednesday that these definitions were different enough to let the case move forced. His analysis necessarily focused on what Carroll had and had not proved at trial, as well as the harm Carroll experienced from (Trump’s) abuse.
