To distinguish this type of turbid Japanese alcohol from that of the ubiquitous and transparent sake, there are two distinct if slightly misleading categories: seishu (清酒), or clear sake, and doburoku (濁酒). However, when making doburoku, they are all simultaneously placed in with the yeast starter, causing the resulting mixture to be comparatively overflowing with sugars. For nearly as long as rice has been cultivated in Japan, doburoku has existed. In essence, all doburoku made from then on came to be called mitsuzoushu (密造酒), “secretly produced alcohol,” or moonshine. CNN —The US is returning 297 history-spanning antiquities stolen or smuggled from India, many dating back centuries. In July, the US and India signed an agreement to protect cultural property by preventing illegal trades and streamline the process to return stolen antiquities back to India. “Prime Minister (Modi) thanked President Biden for his support in the return of these artifacts,” the India’s Ministry of External Affairs said. India has faced an uphill battle in protecting its valuable cultural treasures from looters, though it has been making headway in recent years. In 2022, the US returned 307 stolen treasures to India as part of a 15-year investigation into international trafficking networks.

But memories weren’t enough for one British tourist, who was caught this week engraving the initials of himself and his family into one of the city’s 2,000-year-old houses. Pompeii was destroyed by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79CE and is now one of Italy's most popular -- and most fragile -- tourist sites. However in June, when a tourist from Kazakhstan was caught carving his initials on the House of the Ceii in the ancient city, Pompeii’s director Gabriel Zuchtriegel said that the tourist would have to pay for the restoration of the wall. A lesser charge for defacing heritage sites can impose fines between 10,000 to 40,000 euros. In 2022, an Australian tourist even rode a moped around the ancient site.

The country’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority is active but relatively new in its current form, having been consolidated as a single agency only in 2009. The practice of emergency management has generally originated from the first responder community and the civil defense era, primarily with a focus on consequence management. But as emergency management agencies have been designed, emergency management systems have been shaped by laws and agreements across government bureaucracies and partners in the private and nonprofit sectors with a narrower focus on managing consequences, focused more on logistics than sociology. But disaster management in practice is still fundamentally a numbers game. Strong emergency management agencies are also important.

Less obviously visible but equally impressive are the historical treasures, some more than 12,000 years old, that can be found underground. Unlike the Basilica, this underground chamber was completely forgotten about until less than 15 years ago. Other than locals herding their livestock through the ruins of a garrison city dating to the 6th century, few people went there. Now, the site has given up numerous treasures including rock-cut tombs, an olive processing workshop and a series of underground cisterns. Yeraltı, literally meaning underground, was originally a dungeon in the basement of a fort built by the Byzantines in the 8th century CE.

London CNN —Microplastics have been found in historic soil samples for the first time, according to a new study, potentially upending the way archaeological remains are preserved. In total, the study identified 16 different microplastic polymer types in contemporary and archived soil samples, the statement adds. While preserving archaeological remains in situ has been the favored approach in recent years, the new findings could trigger a change in approach, as microplastic contamination could compromise the remains’ scientific value. “The presence of microplastics can and will change the chemistry of the soil, potentially introducing elements which will cause the organic remains to decay. If that is the case, preserving archaeology in situ may no longer be appropriate.”The study was published in Science of the Total Environment.

CNN —One of the UK’s oldest and most important cathedrals is hosting two ’90s-themed silent discos, a move that has proved popular with revelers but sparked a backlash from some Christians, who say a disco has no place in a cathedral. Bathed in colorful illuminations, clutching glow sticks and wearing headphones that blasted ’90s music directly into their ears, hundreds of people danced well into the night on Thursday in Canterbury Cathedral, Kent. Founded in 597 CE, the cathedral is the seat of Britain’s most senior bishop, the Archbishop of Canterbury, the head of the worldwide Anglican communion. Chapter of Canterbury CathedralThe cathedral enthused on social media about the “fantastic atmosphere” created, and another disco is scheduled for Friday evening.
