Arm Holdings is a UK-based semiconductor and software design company that has been around for quite some time and been through multiple corporate events, changes of ownership and multiple large investors. The majority shareholder of Arm (ARM) is Japanese conglomerate Softbank, which bought the company in 2016 before taking it public again on the Nasdaq in 2023. The stock formed a base into March, held $120-area support and is now mounting another attack after breaking the gray dotted downtrend resistance/trigger level at $135. I do not yet hold the stock, but I am looking to add to our holdings at current levels and will require the stock to remain above that $135 breakout level now serving as support. But don't confuse Osmani's overall optimism on the AI space for blanket bullishness on AI-adjacent stocks. Many AI stocks, in fact, are detached from fundamentals and are risky, he told Business Insider on Monday. As evidence of this, he cited the performance of a basket of 50 AI stocks his firm monitors. "We like companies that can monetize AI already, which, in effect, these companies are recipients of the sizable spend going on in AI — spend from the hyperscalers, spend from the corporates," he said. Below are five AI stocks that Osmani is betting on for the years to come.

Nov 29 (Reuters) - Synopsys (SNPS.O) on Wednesday forecast first-quarter revenue above Wall Street expectations, as artificial intelligence (AI) adoption boosted demand for the company's chip designing software. Synopsys forecast current-quarter revenue between $1.63 billion and $1.66 billion, above analysts' average estimate of $1.60 billion. The rise in custom chip design efforts by firms like Microsoft (MSFT.O) and Alphabet (GOOGL.O) has also boosted demand. "You need a very specific silicon in order to power that (AI) training," Sassine Ghazi, the company's president and chief operating officer, said of the boom in AI chips in an interview. Ghazi told Reuters that increased use of Synopsys AI services helped boost the value of some of its contracts by 20% at renewal time.

Nov 21 (Reuters) - Autodesk (ADSK.O) forecast full-year revenue above market estimates on Tuesday, in a sign that client spending on its design software remains resilient in an uncertain economy. Shares of the San Francisco-based company rose 2.8% after market, as it also posted higher revenue and profit in the third quarter. The company has been benefiting from higher sales and recurring revenue as clients in the construction sector look to optimize their industrial design software despite high borrowing costs. Autodesk, whose AutoCAD software is used by construction, engineering and manufacturing companies, expects full-year revenue to be in the range of $5.45 billion to $5.47 billion, compared with LSEG estimates of $5.43 billion. Autodesk's architecture, engineering and construction segment reported a 17% rise in revenue from a year earlier to $675 million.

A slower-than-expected chip industry recovery has a cascading impact on firms like Cadence, which makes software tools and hardware that help produce blueprints for chips before they are mass manufactured. Hauwei also unveiled new smartphones in recent weeks that use advanced chips, which analysts say are domestically made. "These surveillance chips are relatively easy to manufacture compared to smartphone processors," said the source familiar with the surveillance camera industry's supply chain, adding that HiSilicon's return would shake up the market. A key factor is that the company appears to have worked around U.S. restrictions on chip design software. Huawei has not commented on the phone's 5G capabilities or how it produced the advanced chip. The United States has no evidence that Huawei can produce smartphones with advanced chips in large volumes, U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo said on Tuesday.

Arm’s $52 bln IPO value sets stage for a fall

Arm’s IPO investors are effectively paying a slight premium while also betting that both growth and profitability are about to soar. Haas could then charge higher royalty rates. In the last calendar year, the company estimated that its royalty revenue equated to 1.7% of total worldwide spending on Arm-based chips. It’s not clear how many important Arm customers like Apple (AAPL.O), Nvidia (NVDA.O) and Samsung Electronics (005930.KS) have agreed to pay higher royalty rates. Nor will rising royalty rates necessarily compensate for possibly ongoing sluggish sales of smartphones, its key historic market.

SoftBank’s reduced Arm price tag is still too high

The lesson for SoftBank and Arm is clear: chip investors are laser-focused on medium-term operating profit, not just revenue. Reuters GraphicsThere are three key moving parts to Arm’s valuation. Under SoftBank, Arm’s operating margin has dropped to around 25%, from roughly 40% in 2015 – a consequence of Son’s preference for heavy investments in research. If Arm nabbed the same multiple, its enterprise value would be $33 billion, using the above growth and operating margin. To mimic and sustain Nvidia-esque growth, Arm CEO Rene Haas would have to keep ramping up investments in engineers and sales teams, which would weigh on margins.

A smartphone with a displayed Arm Ltd logo is placed on a computer motherboard in this illustration taken March 6, 2023. The price range, which has not been previously reported, would translate into a valuation for Arm of roughly between $50 billion and $54 billion, and an offering of $5 billion to $5.4 billion. It would make Arm the most valuable company to list in New York since electric car maker Rivian Automotive (RIVN.O) debuted in 2021. The valuation Arm is currently seeking represents a climb-down from the $64 billion valuation at which SoftBank acquired the 25% stake in the company it did not already own from its $100 billion Vision Fund last month. Arm has already signed up many of its major clients as investors in its IPO, Reuters reported on Friday.

Arm IPO depends on more than Big Tech support

Here's how Bank of America, Morgan Stanley, and UBS recommend investing in AI. Bank of America, Morgan Stanley, and UBS are more optimistic about AI stocks after each expressed hesitations earlier this year as shares of companies tied to the technology exploded higher. In contrast, Morgan Stanley has dismissed concerns that AI stocks are in a bubble. "Inevitably, the market will compare AI to the dot-com boom," wrote Morgan Stanley analyst Shawn Kim in a July report. As for chipmakers, Morgan Stanley agreed with Bank of America that the path forward is bifurcated.

But the company's current quarter forecast had a midpoint slightly below analyst estimates, sending shares down 4.4% at $230.60 in after-hours trading. Cadence forecast full-year revenue between $4.05 billion and $4.09 billion, largely above analysts' average estimate of $4.06 billion, according to Refinitiv data.
