Insurance experts said the back-to-back hurricanes could signal rising insurance rates nationwide. AdvertisementTwo back-to-back hurricanes in Florida in recent weeks will likely raise home insurance rates even higher in a state that is already grappling with prices nearly four times the national average, insurance experts told Business Insider. The compounding financial crises of Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton could also point to looming hikes in insurance rates nationwide, the home insurance experts said. They pointed to the recent Florida storms as examples of the increasingly severe and frequent climate catastrophes wreaking havoc on the global insurance market. AdvertisementAn uptick in reinsurance rates in recent years has been a driving force behind climbing insurance rates nationwide, said Kyle Ulrich, president and CEO of the Florida Association of Insurance Agents.

New York CNN —Federal Communications Commission chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel denounced former President Donald Trump’s “threats against free speech” Thursday after he attacked CBS and called for the network to “lose its license” over a recent “60 Minutes” interview with Vice President Kamala Harris. In recent days, the former president has lambasted the Harris interview, accusing CBS News of editing the sit-down with correspondent Bill Whitaker. “As I’ve said before, the First Amendment is a cornerstone of our democracy.”Trump’s attacks on CBS comes after he backed out of his own “60 Minutes” interview last week and has repeatedly fended off invitations from television networks, including CNN and Fox News, for additional debates, instead opting for sit-downs with right-wing media outlets. Following ABC’s Trump-Harris debate in September, Trump dialed into “Fox & Friends,” where he called for the Disney-owned network to have its license “take[n] away.”Rosenworcel’s statement is the second time this week she has spoken out in support of broadcasters. On Tuesday, the FCC chairwoman issued a statement calling threats from Florida’s Health Department to prosecute local TV stations over an abortion rights ad “dangerous,” and emphasizing that pressure from the state government “undermines the fundamental principle of free speech.”

Vice President Kamala Harris revealed this week that she owns a Glock — a weapon that is restricted for purchase in California amid a court battle over the state’s gun laws. The Harris campaign did not specify where and when she bought the Glock, which model she owns or which storage devices she uses. New York CNN —Shari Redstone, the chair of CBS parent company Paramount Global, said Wednesday that CBS leadership made a “bad mistake” with their handling of “CBS Mornings” co-host Tony Dokoupil’s contentious interview last week with author Ta-Nehisi Coates. In stark opposition to what CBS editorial leadership told staff on Monday, Redstone said she did not think Dokoupil had violated the network’s editorial standards when he grilled Coates over the content of his new book. I think he handled himself and showed the world and modeled what civil discourse is. On Wednesday, Redstone said the network’s executives made a “bad mistake” in how they handled the ensuing controversy over the interview. Several correspondents and producers had expressed concern with Dokoupil’s conduct in numerous instances, beyond the Coates interview.

The billionaire philanthropist launched “Action for Women’s Health”, a fund through her organization Pivotal Ventures. In September 2018, 50,568 migrants tried to cross the southern border between legal ports of entry. A year later, 52,546 immigrants tried to cross, and in September 2020, the number was 54,771. This September’s preliminary total of about 54,000 attempted illegal crossings also includes an unspecified number of apprehensions at the northern U.S. border. Northern crossings have long been a tiny fraction of southern border crossings, though they have risen in 2024. It is not yet known how many immigrants came into the U.S. in the same period legally through newly created pathways established by the Biden administration.

Vice President Kamala Harris for weeks was criticized for avoiding tough questions that came with long-form traditional media interviews. In an interview with CBS News’ “60 Minutes” that aired Monday evening, she faced many of them all at once. “Was it a mistake to loosen the immigration policies as much as you did?” “60 Minutes” correspondent Bill Whitaker asked. Whitaker, who noted that the border security issue had been ongoing for decades, tried twice more to pin Harris down. It was just one of the searing questions that Whitaker formulated as he peppered Harris and, for a shorter time, Minnesota Gov.

New York CNN —CBS News executives said Monday that a heated morning show interview with acclaimed author Ta-Nehisi Coates, during which his new book was compared to “extremist” writings, did not meet the network’s editorial standards. CBS executives told staffers during a daily editorial meeting that the contentious “CBS Mornings” interview last week with Coates, led by co-anchor Tony Dokoupil, had been addressed with Dokoupil. The assessment pacified some employees who had objected to Dokoupil’s tone during the segment with Coates. During the September 30 interview, Dokoupil took issue with Coates’ framing in the book. The gripping interview — intense by the often cozy standards of morning television —has since been viewed many millions of times on streaming websites.

Housing is one of many issues Vance, the Republican nominee, believes are rooted in the arrival of undocumented migrants in America. But many economists caution that connecting rising numbers of immigrants to housing costs is no simple thing. Other economists have noted links between immigrants and increased housing costs. Vance later shared two studies on housing and immigration that showed a link between increased immigration and rising housing costs — though each offered various caveats, including noting that the impact changes over time. Indeed, Zillow data shows a clear upward trend in Springfield rents this year compared with 2023.

It’s not hard to conclude that former President Donald Trump himself makes it nearly impossible to have the type of debate Vance and Walz participated in Tuesday night. But Trump has never participated in a debate that didn’t devolve into something more pugilistic and even immature and juvenile at times. Going into this debate, I assumed that both vice presidential nominees would be more focused on the tops of the tickets. It's an interesting decision given how it seems as if the Trump campaign team desperately wants to re-attach Biden’s unpopular brand to Harris. I think Trump and his team are convinced Harris needs another debate more than Trump does.
