Tennessee is one of some two dozen states that have passed laws limiting gender-affirming care for young people. The Tennessee law, called the Protecting Children From Gender Mutilation Act, prohibits the use of puberty-blocking medications for transgender adolescents, for example, but permits them for children who go into puberty at an early age. It bans the use of sex hormones like testosterone in transgender adolescents but allows it for other health issues, such as for children assigned male at birth. It bans gender-affirming surgeries for transgender adolescents — such surgeries are extremely rare — but allows similar surgical procedures that affirm the sex a child is assigned at birth, even on infants who are intersex. The Supreme Court ruled in 2020 — somewhat surprisingly given its conservative majority — that differential treatment of transgender and gay people is impermissible under civil rights law.

My watch constantly buzzes with “relax reminders.” The number of calories appears next to every menu item at fast-food restaurants. The “nudge doctrine” the pair developed has led to the creation of hundreds of “nudge units” in governments all over the world (including our own), that seek to put nudges in policies and procedures. The science behind nudging is little more than a thin set of claims about how humans are “predictably irrational,” and our policies and systems should heavily divest from its influence. The nudge doctrine originated in behavioral economics, a field of applied social science that has deeply influenced public policy and algorithm design. Behavioral economics is based in large part on the Nobel-winning insights of Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky, whose groundbreaking experiments in the 1970s showed that humans made systematic errors when reasoning about statistics.

REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNov 27 (Reuters) - Australia's competition watchdog said on Monday new competition laws were required in response to the rapid expansion of digital platforms such as Amazon (AMZN.O), Apple (AAPL.O), Google (GOOGL.O), Meta (META.O) and Microsoft (MSFT.O) in the country. "Our proposed reforms include a call for targeted consumer protections and service-specific codes to prevent anti-competitive conduct by particular designated digital platforms," ACCC Chair Gina Cass-Gottlieb said. The aforementioned five digital platforms did not immediately respond to Reuters' request for a comment. The regulator has also proposed new mandatory obligations on all digital platforms to address scams, harmful apps, fake reviews, including notice and action requirements and stronger verification of business users and reviews. Must ensure competition laws are fit-for-purpose to respond to the potential challenges posed by emerging technologies such as generative AI and virtual reality, ACCC said.

In North America, South America, Europe and elsewhere, those who consider themselves to be “conservatives” may or may not embrace liberal commitments. You can be, at once, a liberal, as understood here, and a conservative; you can be a leftist and illiberal. Historically, both Republicans and Democrats have been part of the liberal tradition. Many liberals have invoked an anticaste principle to combat entrenched forms of inequality on the basis of race, sex, and disability. The rule of law is not the same as a commitment to freedom of speech, freedom of religion or freedom from unreasonable searches and seizures.
