Arab and Muslim voters moved away from the Democratic Party this year in ways that led some community leaders to warn of a lasting shift from a voting bloc that has been reliably Democratic for two decades since it abandoned the GOP. Muslim voters backed Republican George W. Bush in 2000, but fled the GOP in response to the Bush administration’s post-9/11 military interventions abroad and anti-terror policies at home, which they felt unfairly targeted people of Islamic faith. In the two decades since then, Muslim Americans have broken roughly 2-to-1 for Democrats, while groups representing the community institutionally aligned themselves with Democrats, much like other groups representing voters of color. A spokesperson for the University of Pittsburgh said it “unequivocally condemns antisemitism” and will provide campus police escorts to Jewish students during the upcoming Jewish holidays. After the attack on Goodwin, two Jewish students at the University of Michigan were assaulted in separate incidents off campus. And on Friday, a group of six to eight men assaulted another Jewish student off campus at the University of Pittsburgh while using antisemitic slurs. They said there were numerous violent attacks on Palestinian, pro-Palestinian and visibly Muslim students around college campuses, as well as harassment of visibly Muslim students or students wearing keffiyehs. In New York that month, a Jewish driver struck a protester with his car at an off-campus demonstration involving Columbia students.

On Monday, at a hip Arab coffee shop in Dearborn, Mich., Nihad Awad, a co-founder and the national executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, or CAIR, told me that as a Palestinian American Muslim who voted for Joe Biden in 2020, he feels “betrayed bitterly” over the administration’s position on the war in Gaza. So he was in the Detroit area this week to support the campaign to get voters to choose “uncommitted” in Michigan’s Democratic presidential primary on Tuesday. But as our conversation progressed, it became clear to me that his objective is not simply to send President Biden a message about the war and make him shift his policy, as is the aim of many I spoke with in Michigan in the past few days. Awad wants more. He doesn’t only want Biden to be politically corrected; he wants him politically crushed.

CNN —A former National Security Council official has reached a plea deal on hate crime charges after going on racist, anti-Palestinian and Islamophobic rants against a food cart vendor in New York in November. Stuart Seldowitz, 64, pleaded not guilty in November to two counts of fourth-degree hate crime/stalking and one count of second-degree aggravated harassment, court records show. In another video, Seldowitz tells the vendor, “We’re going to put big signs here saying this guy believes in Hamas.”In another video, Seldowitz asks the man whether he’s familiar with Egypt’s General Intelligence Service, better known as the Mukhabarat. Mohamed Attia, of the Street Vendor Project, told CNN the vendor said he did not instigate the conversation with Seldowitz. His family’s landlord was charged in what police are calling a hate crime and has pleaded not guilty to charges including murder.
