Holger Rune, an enigma at this point, is the highest seed in Sinner’s quarter; Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic wouldn’t come around until a final. Aryna Sabalenka suffered the same fate as Coco Gauff, drawing a former Grand Slam champion. Draw day at the Australian Open was not a great one for American tennis fans. The 10-time Australian Open champion would then be seeded to face another Czech, Jiri Lehecka, or three-time major semifinalist Grigor Dimitrov. The prize for the winner of this little cluster of potentially lethal players is a slated fourth round against Gauff.

Trump's transition team aims to kill Biden EV tax credit: Reuters

Win Mcnamee | Getty Images News | Getty ImagesPresident-elect Donald Trump's transition team is planning to kill the $7,500 consumer tax credit for electric-vehicle purchases as part of broader tax-reform legislation, two sources with direct knowledge of the matter told Reuters. Ending the tax credit could have grave implications for an already stalling U.S. EV transition. Representatives with the Trump transition and Tesla did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The alliance last month in an Oct. 15 letter urged Congress to retain the EV tax credits, calling them "critical to cementing the U.S. as a global leader in the future of automotive technology and manufacturing." Trump's energy transition team views the consumer EV credit as an easy target, believing that eliminating it would get broad consensus in a Republican-controlled Congress as part of a larger tax-reform bill.

I was in the White House before. The Bidens have similarly spent significant time at the family’s Delaware homes, though the White House has been both Joe and Jill Biden’s primary residence on weekdays for the past four years. I don’t feel that way,” Melania Trump told Fox News’ Ainsley Earhardt last month. The prospect of a first lady declining to live full time at the White House offers a remarkable break in precedent but should not be surprising to those who have long observed Melania Trump. Some of the ads feature doctors speaking passionately about abortion and saying that Republican candidates shouldn't represent "us" or "our" communities in Congress. But in at least four instances, House Majority PAC, a super PAC aligned with House Democratic leadership, featured Republican-blasting doctors in their ads who did not live in the district where they were advertising. The path to the House majority runs through all four of the districts where these ads ran. Since then, both doctors and patients have often become key personal messengers on abortion for Democrats. But Republicans blasted House Majority PAC over the ads, calling them misleading and accusing the group of spreading falsehoods about GOP incumbents and candidates.

“They have early voting, late voting, everything is so ridiculous,” Trump said onstage in Palm Beach, Florida, in July. It is great if you want to vote early,” Whatley said during a tour stop in Tampa, Florida, this summer. He voted early this month in his home state of Florida and posted a TikTok video encouraging people to vote early. He also occasionally straightly delivers a prepared remark that encourages early voting without caveating his skepticism of the practice. Still, the inconsistency of Trump’s early voting messaging has led many of his supporters toward cynicism and confusion around the topic.

Low-income families who are robbed of their grocery funds may no longer get reimbursed if Congress doesn’t act by Sept. 30. Alvey treads carefully when she and her dog, Stuart, walk the dappled trail behind their apartment in Folsom, Calif. Since the pandemic, her neighbors have included homeless campers along a brook known as Humbug Creek. There’s the man who periodically emerges from the brush, yelling in fear and tearing at tree limbs. Until recently, federal appellate courts limited how far cities could go to clear encampments. But late last month, the Supreme Court ruled that they could remove homeless residents sleeping outdoors, a decision that has already begun to reshape how they deal with homelessness.

On day eight of Wimbledon 2024, Elena Rybakina stepped up to her new billing, the ATP made a germy decision, and there was chaos on Court One. Elena Rybakina is one of three players left in the women’s field who has won a Grand Slam title before. Rybakina plays with a big serve and with flat power that keeps her ball low. More importantly, do we too often discount the data point of winning a tournament on grass the week before Wimbledon?

On day seven of Wimbledon 2024, Carlos Alcaraz showed off his tennis diet, Lulu Sun kept building her story, and Daniil Medvedev set up a rematch. To really feel good on a tennis court, Carlos Alcaraz needs to play points that get the crowd off their seats. He lost the third set 6-1 and went on a run of losing four service games in a row. The Dali container vessel after striking the Francis Scott Key Bridge. “Once you get here, I’ll go grab the workers on the Key Bridge and then stop the outer loop,” an officer said. When the Key Bridge was built decades ago, container ships were a fraction of the size and weight they are today. Miguel Luna, a native of El Salvador, was also working on the Key Bridge.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Alabama lawmakers facing public pressure to restart in vitro fertilization services in the state advanced legislation to shield providers from the fallout of a court ruling that equated frozen embryos to children. Committees in the state Senate and House on Tuesday approved identical bills that would protect providers from lawsuits and criminal prosecution for the “damage or death of an embryo” during IVF services. The state's three major IVF providers paused services after the Alabama Supreme Court's ruling last month because of the sweeping liability concerns it raised. The court decision received immediate backlash as groups across the country raised concerns about a ruling recognizing embryos as children. The American Society for Reproductive Medicine, a group representing IVF providers across the country, said the legislation does not go far enough.

But department stores, focused on America’s middle class, are fading. The victims of shifting consumer tastes were not the department stores that anchored the local mall, it was the small, locally owned stores along downtown shopping districts that were closing their doors. And possibly even more than the big box competitors, department stores have suffered from consumers shifting to buying items online rather than in person. The steady closing of the department stores that once served as “anchors” of malls across suburban America has been another nail in the coffin of many malls, hurting the department stores that remained in hollowed-out malls with a fraction of their earlier traffic. Saunders said one of the primary problem for Macy’s is that its holding company, formerly known as Federated Department Stores, spent much of its resources on buying other department store brands, such May’s Department Stores, and Filene’s, rather than investing in the stores its held.

Mr. Trump, even as he seeks to bring the Republican Party fully on board with his renomination, faces significant questions about the political and financial impact of his many legal troubles. For one thing, both Mr. Trump and Mr. Biden are raising money through joint fund-raising committees, which do not have to file reports until April. Mr. Trump, on the other hand, is still fending off a primary challenger, Nikki Haley. And, perhaps more critically, committees backing Mr. Trump are spending millions each month on legal expenses. Mr. Trump faces four criminal indictments along with civil cases, which are proving costly.
